The more I learn, the more horrified I get, and the harder it becomes to function in the real world. Thoughts? by [deleted]in SRSDiscussion

I, too, am currently in your situation. Until a few months ago, I laughed at misogynistic jokes (even though I thought they were completely idiotic), used ableist language and generally let the patriarchal system push me around.

I went through weeks of anxiety, tearing up at the drop of a hat and drawing up plans to construct my little hut in the bush. Until I realized I was stronger than that and took small steps to make my immediate surroundings a better place.

I started calling my brother out on his sexist comments. I carefully explained to my mum about the expectations the beauty industry places on us women. I removed anyone who expressed sexist sentiments from my facebook and remove myself from social situations when prejudiced conversations pop up.

Each time I calmly explain why a person's language or actions are oppressive, even if they don't listen, I feel a little stronger. It solidifies my position and I feel like I can take on more and more as time goes on.

Good luck, friend!

Exactly my point, well put.

It's incredibly frustrating when someone tries to argue a point without even having a rudimentary understanding of the subject they're discussing.

Monash or U of Melbourne? by Bazingasin australia

[–]smiley_baby 1 point2 points ago

Having been to both (at Monash currently), I found the University of Melbourne to have a robust social aspect, however when it came to academics, they were stuffy and old fashioned. Monash, in my opinion, is more progressive (they were the centre of student protests in the 70s!) academically and are generally less afraid of change.

I should note I studied Arts (Anthropology) at Melbourne before moving to Monash and now I'm studying Arts (International Studies).

Whats something you've said to someone that really wasn't meant to leave your head? by Chillinvillain123in AskReddit

I'm from Australia, the north western suburbs of Melbourne, where there a lot of new migrants and the drug trade booms.

Don't get me wrong, it's safe and I can walk around at night feeling safe, but there are some "gangs" (read: groups of males who have such large egos they need to go around intimidating other males) that frequent an area close by. It's pretty rare for things to escalate to that level. But yeah... freaky none the less.

Yeah, it was a gang fight, both sides went there with weapons, and he ended up coming out second best. I'm not very sympathetic towards his plight because he left school to join this "gang" and went to the fight knowing what was going to happen.

I was chilling at my friend's house, and we were all reminiscing about high school. In seventh/eighth grade I "dated" a lot of guys, and my girl friends were reminding me of this. It started to grate me when the insults started rolling in, especially from this one girl who had been particularly cruel to me throughout that time.

The guy she dated in eighth grade had died in some crazy gang turf war from a machete to the head. And as she let another insult fly, I couldn't help but hiss, "Well at least all of my ex-boyfriends are still alive".

Yeowch.

I am a guy with a rare sexual illness. Its so life-ruining that one sufferer of it decided to be castrated to seek relief and start progressing with his life AMAA by 2sexy4mybodyin IAmA

You sound like you are suffering from an extreme case of depression. I'd look into that first before a rare sexual syndrome.

When you say you struggle to start conversations with people, and you can't find a reason to get out of bed, that really strikes me as the apathy that comes with depression.

Take it from someone who's been there. Please go to your local GP and see if they can help you. You can feel better with support.

Best of luck in your journey :)

Cate Blanchett goes without digital enhancement on the cover of Intelligent Life and I think she looks much more beautiful for doing so! by SerialExperimentsAmyin TwoXChromosomes

[–]smiley_baby 4 points5 points ago

I don't want to take anything away from Cat Blanchett as she's a great actor and lovely to look at but let's not forget that photographic lighting also makes a huge difference in the way that someone's skin tone is rendered. From what I can tell they are using a broad source of lighting, which is very flattering (for everyone!) as it creates soft shadows and "glosses over" imperfections.

I've got to say though, it's nice seeing someone look relatively "normal" on the cover of a magazine.

Writers, if you write while under the influence of pot or alcohol, how does it affect your writing? by ComradePiggyin writing

[–]smiley_baby 1 point2 points ago

First up, my best writing comes to me in that half awake/half asleep hypnagogic cloud of brilliance. I feel because I'm so relaxed (or tired) all of my barriers break down and I'm able to just be freely creative.

Waking up after a big night out drinking really helps this process along, for me at least.

When I'm high, I get kinda anxious, and as others have said, find it hard to concentrate. I'll pick up a pen but then forget what I was going to write.

Does anyone know what's up on the South Yarra train lines? by ROBZYin melbourne

Yeah, I think mine was the last train they let through. I saw the guy on the side of the tracks with some firemen surrounding him. His ribs were sticking out at all kinds of disgusting angles. Yeah...
