I had Penderyn Welsh whisky a while ago, and it was fantastic. What other great Scotch-like non-Scottish whiskys are out there?

I've tried quite a few different batches and they all share some pretty similar characteristics. None have been bad so far, but a few were bright and shining stars over the rest. All of 'em taste like well-put-together Bourbon meets thick, creamy, beefy malt poured over bananas.

I have an '11 release that isn't quite so well-balanced. The damned thing tastes like a peated, lightly smoked Mrs. Butterworth's faux-maple syrup.

It's near the same price here, but there are so many 18-year-old expressions from other distilleries out there for less money; some good, some not nearly as good.

I've had nothing but wonderful experiences with Stranahan's. Bourbon-y, banana-y deliciousness. Damn it, I think I need to go get a bottle now...a buddy of mine has a few.

Seconding this, although the 'shouldn't be too expensive' caveat may be a bit off - it's one of the most expensive base expressions aged to 18 years that can be found commonly, and it is worth every. single. fucking. penny.

The Single Barrel really is hard to beat - it's been my favorite Bourbon-casked Speyside for a couple years now. The Portwood's grand, but place it side-by-side with the Single Barrel in all its palate-hijacking glory and it struggles a bit. Do you still have the TUN 1401? I'd love to read a review of it, there's a bottle of it calling to me every time I step into my buddy's liquor store in Vegas - the entry price leaves me hesitant.

A suggestion for one bottle too far: Try Macallan's Cask Strength edition - either the 10 year old or the standard (whatever you can find in your neck of the woods). I realize you've already experimented with the regular 12 year old, but the Cask Strength really epitomizes what a proper Sherry casking can do for a whisky - explosively sweet & spicy, an absolute gem amongst whiskies. It's head-and-shoulders above bottles costing twice as much, and makes for a fantastic introduction into the world of sweet & savory whiskys. Better than any wine I've ever tasted. Scapa 16 also comes highly recommended around these parts as well; a personal favorite.

That's good to hear. My fear there is he may simply be building a solid reputation for the company with the intent of selling out to one of the conglomerates for a great big payday. If this is his passion though...perhaps not.

I still have the summer & winter 2010 releases lying around, as well as the Inaugural - all that being said, the jealousy I'm feeling toward Mr._Head right now is quite overwhelming. I have yet to sip a Kilchoman bottling that didn't blow me away.
