My mom gets frequent UTIs, and she douches regularly. When I mentioned that douching isn't the healthiest thing for your vagina, she said she was actually given permission by her doctor. I know the instinct is to chastise someone as soon as she talks about douching, but is it possible that they're not always bad? I've never seen a scientific source either way.

It's not rocket science, but it's not second nature to do something differently when you've been doing it one way your entire life. And when it's the middle of the night and you're groggy, habit sinks in.

It's like if I put you behind the wheel of a car where they drive on the opposite side of the road. Sure, you've been driving for years, but I bet there's a moment of hesitation when you're tired and get to your first roundabout.

If they interacted strongly or via the electromagnetic force, we'd see them, either in present particle annihilations or in interactions from when the universe was of a higher density and energy, like in the CMB. We know they interact gravitationally, from things like rotatation curves of galaxies.

The most viable candidate for a dark matter particle in a mass range we haven't seen yet is the neutralino, the lightest supersymmetric parter to the neutrino. Without getting into the details of supersymmetry (I'm no expert, only taken a few classes in particle physics), since the neutrino is known to interact weakly, the neutralino must act the same way. The neutrino/neutralino also has the benefit of having a very low cross-section (probability of interacting with another particle), which would explain why it's so hard to find them.

If you want to know more, I'd suggest starting with the Wikipedia articles on WIMPS and the CMS (Cryogenic Dark Matter Search). It's a really exciting experiment, and there's a decent chance we'll see dark matter signatures in the next few years.

One correction: WIMPs also interact via the weak force. They're not 'slightly interacting,' they actually interact 'weakly (and gravitationally),' if that makes any sense. Calling them WGIMPs is less confusing, but it isn't as cool an acronym.

I'm a woman who went to a very similar school, in terms of ratio. Of the handful of people I know who were in relationships as long as yours, most of them are still together, 5+ years after they first started dating. Stop worrying about all the other guys- she chose you for a reason.

I've had a 0% interest credit card since 2008, when I was a college student with no credit history. As long as you pay off the balance every month, the rate won't increase. Seeing as he's said he's not in debt, I don't see why everyone is jumping on this. He could easily just have kept his credit cards from before he lost his home.

So let me get this straight- you saw another guy in the same room as your girlfriend, so you immediately got so angry that you closed your computer. Now you 'hate' him because he contacted you on facebook (wrongly, but still, this isn't a hate-worthy offense). And you want to control who your girlfriend can and can't talk to.

This all raises red flags of possibly being abusive- on your end. You can't reasonably expect her to ignore 50% of the world's population (all the guys you 'barely know', in your own words). It would be different if you were especially concerned about a particular guy. But if you're concerned about all guys, the problem is on your end. We all get jealous, but the way you're dealing with it is unhealthy for yourself and unfair to her.

To add onto this, if you take iron supplements and your RBC levels aren't rising you might want to try switching to an extended-release version or a liquid supplement like Fluoridex. They're supposed to be easier on your stomach, which helps absorption.

Otherwise, get yourself to a specialist. While anemia is relatively common, persistent anemia that won't respond to supplements could indicate a deeper problem, like leukemia or GI bleeding.

More seriously, there are more opinions about string theory than there are string theorists. If it were a generally-accepted area of theory, it wouldn't be nearly as popular- you don't see many papers that reprove Maxwell's Equations or even general relativity these days. Even the people I know who work on string theory are conflicted as to whether they believe it. You'll have to do better than that to find an example of hegemony in physics.

Find me any theory that can be proven by two points. That's not statistics, that's anecdotes. Do you have any examples of the 'modern physicist logic' where we create a theory and ignore contrary evidence? Just taking the standard model as an example, I would say that the majority of particle physicists have serious reservations about the theory. Even quantum mechanics has its prominent detractors; read this post for an example.

I think you're just determined to be right but only have your anecdotes to back it up. Instead you're going to resort to ad hominim attacks on myself and my profession. I've given you specific things you could do to prove your point, but you refuse to listen. Note how I don't have to attack you or modern philosophy to get my point across. If you can give me a single controlled example of what you're saying - for instance, put an AT&T SIM in a defective iPhone 4S and show that it works fine - I'll gladly concede the point. In fact, it would be more interesting than this conversation is. Goodnight.
