Tire Rotation Help Needed (quick question) by NotWorkingAtWork2011in Cartalk

[–]respectminivinny 1 point2 points ago

Something someone reads is much more true, and they can talk down on all the real technicians.

Your credentials are no better than mine so get off your high horse.

Put your pride away. I never called you a complete idiot. I said you were wrong.

If you think it's better to go solely off someones experience and not even verify the accuracy of the statements made, you're asking for a big circlejerk.
Let's get everybody that agrees with me together and pat each other on the back even if we're wrong.
That's ruining reddit.

If its something ludicrous and makes no sense, by all means boo them, but please stop these types of posts.

Tread separation from cross rotations is ludicrous and makes no sense.

I beg to differ,
I think it's answers like yours that ruins /r/cartalk.
Your previous comment that states the tires tread could separate is incredibly wrong.
All you're doing is scaring people into changing the way they do things by misinformation.
If you had some sort of credible source maybe I'd believe you but all you're saying is you have experience and you assume I'm just citing wikipedia.
Guess what, a lot of people have experience, that doesn't mean they truly understand how any of this stuff is engineered.
I don't know how many radial car tires you've seen with tread separation that was truly a result of cross rotating tires that you can definitively prove was not the result of a manufacturers defect or tire abuse.
Your understanding of a differential is also flawed but that was irrelevant.

I don't know where you heard that tire rotations without switching sides is an industry standard, I can tell you from my experience that it's not.
As a matter of fact if you were to look at Michelins FAQ regarding tread separation nowhere does it mention cross rotation being a cause
Here are pictures I took of Automotive Chassis Systems James Halderman 5th Edition on pages 416 and 417 concerning tire rotations.
The first picture mentions side to side tire rotations as acceptable to correct for a radial tire pull and the second picture shows the methods for tire rotation with the cross rotation as the preferred method.
So I don't know what industry standard you are looking at but this is a current up to date textbook by a respected author in the industry used to train technicians.

It's answers like yours that ruin cartalk because you think your experience makes you infallible.
People come here for help on their problems, we're talking about tire rotation and you're telling the guy he could have tread separation if he does it wrong. If you want to help the guy tell him to rotate his tires. Period. Any rotation is better than none.

Tire Rotation Help Needed (quick question) by NotWorkingAtWork2011in Cartalk

[–]respectminivinny -1 points0 points ago

This is simply not true.
Radial tires have an extra set of cords that wrap radially around the tire. This promotes stiffness in the tire preventing those flat spots that were prevalent in bias-ply tires.
Your argument here is even contradictory.
You stated "Tire technology has come a long way. Those layered metal bands move under the layered rubber. If you switch sides it will significantly reduce the life of the tire."
Tire technology has come a long way and the rate of tread separation has not increased due to the inclusion of radial cords.
The layered (not always) metal bands do move and flex inside the rubber but there is much less movement and flexing with radial tires than bias ply or belted bias tires.

Professor Slughorn: Harry!
Harry: Sir!

Hysterical.
As for the fight between Harry and Voldemort, I did not mind that it was extended.
What did bother me was that it didn't happen in the great hall and we didn't see Voldemort flip is lid when Bellatrix, his last loyal death eater dies, and we didn't get to see the result of Harry's sacrifice, that no one was being hurt by Voldemorts spells after the sacrifice.

The extended fight was not bad, but it was still missing so much.

Edit: Harry said "Sir!" not "Professor!", Thanks Jefreem

How was Snape originally supposed to find Harry? (Deathly Hallows) by VogelmitKronein harrypotter

Actually Dumbledore specifically told Snape that Harry must obtain the sword through an act of bravery or something of the sort. Essentially Snape couldn't just hand it over.

embarrassing question about valet parking. by mr_rob_otoin Autos

[–]respectminivinny 1 point2 points ago

If you want a valet to take care of your car and park it up front then tip them a bit when they take your car and then tip again when you get it back.

For example if you were planning on tipping $10, tip $5 before and $5 after.
If you give them $5 before and ask nicely if they can "take care of the car" for you, they'll usually park it right up front.
You leave your car and your key with the valet, they'll give you a ticket you hold on to. They need your key so they can move it as needed.

How much should a person pay to get a timing belt replaced? by iCarbonin Cartalk

[–]respectminivinny 0 points1 point ago

When I was working at a dealer several years ago it was about $400 to do a timing belt.

The thing is, it is so much work to do the timing belt, and so much needs to be removed that we recommend changing the standard drive belts, the water pump, coolant flush, and if necessary the crank and cam seals at the same time.
This does add to the price of the job and can easily get to $600

VW Jetta Airbag/Horn question by hidigidy42in Cartalk

[–]respectminivinny 3 points4 points ago

The clockspring works to connect wires from the steering column to anything on the steering wheel without the wires binding, stretching or snapping.
The only things that need to be controlled on your steering wheel are the horn, the airbag and any radio controls if they are equipped.

Typically when airbags deploy the manufacturer will recommend replacing the clock spring as it gets damaged by the airbag. If there is any broken connection a new airbag could be falsely triggered by the horn wiring. I would hope the engineers have designed the clock spring in such a way as to avoid this and probably over engineered the replacement of the clock spring but I can tell you that in the insurance industry, in the rare event that a car is repairable after the airbag deploys it is standard procedure to replace the clock spring.

tl;dr Do you need to? maybe not. Should you? It should have been done already.

'95 grand cherokee, won't go into gear by awesome_dogin Cartalk

[–]respectminivinny 1 point2 points ago*

As raisedgrooves mentioned it's most likely not broken in any way. It's most likely not in gear. The transfer case itself has not engaged 4 low.
That vehicle should be driven in 2 high for regular driving.
Your owners manual will have a specific sequence for how to engage or disengage 4wd but if it doesn't you can just put it back in a gear that works, get the car moving very slowly, like 1-2mph and then gently put the transmission in neutral, put the transfer case in 2low and then put the transmission in drive.

Some transfer cases say you should do this switch while stopped with your foot off the brake, others say while moving slowly.

Edit: I meant 2 high, there typically isn't a 2 low gear on the transfer case

To all the vette owners C5 or C6? by wallaby13in Autos

Just so you know, the glass roof is sometimes known as a Targa top.
T-tops were available in the C3 vettes as well as 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gen F-bodies, some fox body mustangs, nissan 300zx's, pulsars and some mr2's.
I think that's about it but I'm sure there's another car out there with T-tops that I missed.

Targa tops are available on supras, and honda del sols as well as some italian cars and some porsches.

Todays useless information has been brought to you by the letter P and the number 12.

How about the fact that you are towing a trailer which presents some maneuvering difficulty for the average driver when trying to back into a spot or perform a 3 point turn.
With the concept you increase the wheelbase but still have only 2 axles on the ground so it maneuvers like any other car. With the pickup and camper it acts like a trailer.

Bayside is really nice though so I imagine it must have been a generally positive experience.

I went to Bayside H.S. After the molestation it was known as "Rapeside"
The neighborhood is nice and safe, the school not so much.

I graduated in 02, we had plenty of "security". We had a sexual molestation occur in the basement, two male students molested a female student. By the time I graduated we had metal detectors. Didn't have to deal with gangs or stabbing/shooting.
This was a nicer part of queens.
Western Suffolk is about 30-40 minutes drive from the edge of queens.
So Manhattan is about an hour from the Suffolk/Nassau border.

What the hell, I went to high school in the late 90's early 2000's in NYC and I've never had any experience like this.
