Will Diablo III's "Real Money Auction House" Put An End To Gold Farmers? by brickabrackin diablo3

[–]rek 0 points1 point ago

Because of the fees third party sites will list gold/items for a higher price in the auction house and then sell it cheaper on their own sites. I assume that is what the writer meant, but obviously he didn't explain it very well either way.

Without a doubt it does more than just raise your MF. From what I can tell 5 stacks guarantees at least 2 rares from bosses. My friends and I have run skeleton king many times and none of us have ever gotten less than 2 rares.

I guess it is possible by theboneycronyin pics

That's funny. I don't know anything about casinos or slot machines, but this is the only one I've really played. I took a trip to Reno one weekend to avoid being around my house while some guests were here. Didn't plan to play anything but coming back from lunch my room was being cleaned so I decided to spend $20 and waste a few minutes. Found one of these machines, walked away with $400. I think the most I won was about $50, but I won it repeatedly. Was pretty sure someone was going to come accuse me of cheating. Paid for the entire trip, pretty awesome.

Diablo 3 "Lack of customization and skill choices" by cloversjoein gaming

[–]rek 0 points1 point ago

I really don't see how you could claim that the new system hurts those in the middle. As someone in the middle who didn't even play d2: I wouldn't want to play d3 if it worked the way d2 did. This system is infinitely better than anything I've read about the old one. Of course we like "customizing" our characters: that's why this new system is awesome. Now we can experiment and test all sorts of different things without needing to waste hundreds of hours or browse forums to figure out what not to do. I really couldn't care less what some min/maxer on some forums thinks about the game, I'd rather play the game myself, try new things, and have fun.

"I have terrible taste in men and all the ones I find are garbage! I just met someone recently and want to rush into getting married because he has money, even though I don't like him, is this a good idea?"

...I'm honestly really surprised that the response to this question has been so positive. I'm tempted to assume that this post is fake. He already bought you a car? Saying he's screwed up (like all the other men you've been with apparently) would be an understatement. He sounds like a loser - a crazy mentally unstable loser.

I purchased a GSL Lite ticket from Gom. Am I fucked? by Kaon_Particlein starcraft

[–]rek 17 points18 points ago

Honestly, to not offer the free standard quality stream to everyone (or at least to paying customers) is a pretty lame move on the part of Gom - regardless of if this used to be a double stream or not. I've bought tickets for every season they've offered them, but I'm certainly not upgrading my ticket to watch a few code A games. The small amount of money this move might make them is not even remotely close to the negative reactions it will cause from most their customers. Really should have just had it be free standard quality when they decided not to run double streams (really the entire pricing structure is bad but I wont go into that).

Definitely my favorite, not just because she's cute but because she's good at what she does. She's by far the least awkward on stage and always seems like she knows what she's talking about.

Stephano and Nestea admit to not practicing very much at all, and apparently its the same for DRG... by PEEFsmashin starcraft

[–]rek 5 points6 points ago

I think you mean now everyone knows ;)

Don't worry though: it's still the hardest race to start with and to play at lower levels. My problem with it personally is that it's just really boring after you learn the basics, so I never want to practice it either. Also zerg is too common in master league so I just get ZvZ ALL THE TIME.

Generally I think reddit is overly picky about production issues. There's usually hundreds of upvotes complaining about things most people wouldn't even notice. This time though: I don't see how anyone could have watched IPL and not known this needed to happen. There's a big difference between making a couple small mistakes and just constantly being bad all weekend.

What screen resolution do the pros use? Is there a "best/optimal" resolution that shows the most of the play area? by runswithpaperin starcraft

[–]rek 1 point2 points ago

I'm pretty sure both MLGs I attended had them set to 1920x1080. Generally people don't change it. There are like two or three pros who still play 4:3 (Axslav being the one I can think of) but that's rare and not a very good idea - you can see less on the screen and some events have had issues with letting you use it.

In general you should just play the native resolution of your monitor, unless you have a 4:3 monitor in which case it's time to buy a new one ;) I play 1680x1050 because that's what my monitors are, doesn't feel any different to me when I go play on 1080.

Dear Teevox, Please take non-starcraft streams off the starcraft channel! by FrenzyFictionin starcraft

[–]rek 0 points1 point ago*

I have no idea if this is why it happens because I'm not that familiar with Teevox; however, I do know that I generate my stream list based on the game which the streamer has selected themselves on twitch.tv. It's possible those users have marked themselves as playing starcraft, or maybe teevox just wants you to watch MOBA games and WoW ;)

Also: maybe you could message the guy who made it and he'll let you know what's up? In my experience everyone in this scene is super nice and always willing to help or at least listen to feedback. Reddit posts generally disappear within a day so there's a good chance the person behind Teevox may not even see this, reddit usually works better for large organizations who you can use publicity to pressure.

MarineKingPrime in GSTL by Villantain starcraft

It seems like they should just have a rule that if a game disconnects when one player is clearly ahead but not guaranteed to win then he receives a win but they play a best of 3. That way he's up 1-0, which puts him in a good position (as he was) but doesn't at all guarantee a win.

Not sure how that would work in other formats, like series that are already best of 3, but in those cases it seems like you could be more lenient with granting wins to begin with.

Obviously in this case there was no "good" decision to be made, they were only given two bad choices, I'm just trying to think of ways it could be dealt with in the rules for the future (since it seems pretty obvious blizzard has no intention of resolving this very simple problem).

Can you bet on the IPL in Vegas? by bluegatorin starcraft

[–]rek 1 point2 points ago

Well it would depend on the odds, but MKP is a pretty clear favorite if he plays his best and avoids too many really silly strategies (20 minutes without a starport in TvP for example). I didn't really get any advertising going this event so it's smaller than usual but you can see a lot of redditors opinions on yesterday and today's matches here. Obviously fake points to win a prize is a bit different than wagering your own money, but that would be illegal for me to do ;)

[–]rek[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yea, when the odds get to skewed it's definitely a smart choice to just start picking lots of underdogs. I'm leading in the fantasy GSL right now simply because I chose to bet against DRG advancing from his group - I thought he would advance but the odds were so skewed to his favor that I figured it was worth the risk.

Testing out an NCAA style bracket is definitely something that's been on my mind. I'm definitely going to try something along those lines for one of the coming events; however, I've got a few different ideas I was going to try this time. More along the same lines of the way they do more advanced betting on horse races. There are a lot of different popular bets, such as exacta or trifecta box betting (picking the top 2/3 either in order or not in order). The primary reason I favor that type of betting is because it lets the "market" determine the odds of the players - rewarding picks for underdogs more than a fixed payout bracket would and resulting in fun stats. I do still like the idea of filling out a whole bracket though, I just need to figure out a good event for it and how I would want to do the scoring. It would probably make the most sense for smaller events where the bracket it known in advance and all scoring would be done through that method instead of trying to "balance" it with the more standard types of bets I've been doing.

[–]rek[S] 0 points1 point ago

Haha that is pretty good, last event the odds were really skewed which made betting normally a pretty risky proposition.

I attempted to fix that this time around by adding the "betting tips" section, and it helps that a lot of the current users played MLG and/or GSL as well. The odds seem much more reasonable for this event than they did for MLG (it's not 1:10 for every favorite haha).

Thanks! It's been quite a bit of work, but it's always worth it when people enjoy what you make :)

Now if there could stop being major events for a couple weeks maybe I could finish up some of the missing things from all the other sections haha. I'm still way behind on importing old data.

No problem! I went ahead and deleted the old account then swapped your active account to the old username. Let me know if you have any issues logging in or anything like that, it shouldn't have changed anything (except your login name obviously).

Hi Helio, I saw your thread but apparently I forgot to respond to it later like I intended to. A couple people have asked about open sourcing the code.

I do plan to open up certain things to the community, that would be much easier than doing it all myself, however I'm not going to be releasing all the code at least right now. None of this is about money for me, it's simply not at a stage I want to share it yet. I guess the best way to explain it would be that I'm painting a picture and don't want other people modifying it until I get my ideas on paper first? Plus I would want to go through and clean the code up ;)

I also do have plans for a public API and various other tools, but right now the whole "Events" section of the site is far from complete as 95% of my attention has been paid to the fantasy leagues lately. Once I get things a little further along the path that I'm planning I'll be a lot more open to either open sourcing portions of it and/or be recruiting a small team of people to help. If there's something specific you'd like to see or work on I'm always open to ideas (I just want to make something cool for fun and encourage others to do the same).

Right now I'm just sort of in my "I have an idea in my head and I want to make it" stage. I'm going to need a few more weeks to get things up closer to the level that I really want them, which is why I'm still calling the whole project a beta. Once I'm out of this stage and have time to go back, clean things up, and make sure it's all on the path I want then I'll be looking to expand/open it up more.

Hope you understand :)
