Exact same thing happened to me a year ago! My longest run ever was 12k and I usually stopped after 6 or 8. One evening I decided to see just how far I could go. I was blown away when I ended up running 22. Now I've done two half marathons and will do a full marathon in a few months :-)

You can actually drive quite far into the valley. You head west from the town of Wanaka. Towards the top of the valley is the start of a trail that leads to the Rob Roy glacier - highly recommended!

My ex has depression that is very resistant to medications. We were together for nearly 9 years. The first few years were okay, then the depression really set in. After six years of frequent hospitalizations I just couldn't do it anymore. I still loved her, but the romance and fun were gone. I've been single for over a year now and I'm much happier. My only regret is that I didn't end it sooner.

I remember reading that the divorce rate is MUCH higher for couples where one spouse has depression. It doesn't surprise me at all. It really is a destructive illness.
