There are 5 tick marks between 12 and 1, and only 3 tick marks between 1 and 2. Same between 6 and 7, and 7 and 8.

Does your dog have separation anxiety issues? My dog also does this and I'm pretty confident it's a symptom of his anxiety.

I hate celebrating my birthday. What 'necessary' social customs do you hate doing/being a part of? by RhinoMan2112in AskReddit

[–]pingwax -2 points-1 points ago

Why is it necessary? I haven't done anything for it in years. I don't tell anyone the date and for the few who know (e.g. mother), I've just told them not to plan anything. Just one more day in the year.

Massive Shark bite to the ass (NSFL) by Goochnapkinin WTF

It says it was a shark attack, that the photo was taken by the fire brigade, and that the victim is (was) in grave condition in the hospital. It also contains a warning about entering the water from June to September.

GF's car is done for, cracked engine and old enough that its better to buy another car than repair it. What do I do with the car itself now? (2001 PT Cruiser) by phelan87in AskReddit

[–]pingwax -1 points0 points ago

You might be able to sell it at auction. I've never done that before, but if you call one of the places locally that do insurance auctions, etc. they might be able to explain the process.

You could list in craigslist, describe the condition honestly, and list it for $500 or $1k - see if you get any bites. If the car has a sound body, you might get some offers.

You could try calling around to salvage yards and see if they have any interest in it, but I suspect this will have the least pay off.

Donating is a pretty easy process and will benefit a cause you care about, but if you need cash for a down payment on something new, taking a stab at selling it first couldn't hurt.

ah, from that picture it looked much larger than a wolf spider. i misjudged it. I thought it a couple of inches in leg span at least.

I think this is a type of fishing spider, maybe a dark fishing spider. Very cool looking. Despite its size and intimidating appearance, I think they are harmless.

As an experienced IT technician and manager, I would not tolerate an employee with your attitude.

IT is a customer service organization. It's our job to keep the organization safe, to remove technology as a business obstacle, and enhance the performance and profitability of the business.

If the user was able to disrupt a critical resource, the IT department has failed in their mission and should be held accountable. Users frustrated with a snotty attitude from the IT staff should be angry and should demand better service.

IT does not add to the company's revenue stream; they should be doing their damnedest to justify their existence in the organization by helping the employees that do be as productive and efficient as possible. Within the limitations of protecting the best interests of the organization (as laid down by executive management), IT should be doing what the users tell them, not the other way around. Prima donna attitudes from IT staff are not acceptable.

Ingrown hairs--halp pls! by kornbergin TwoXChromosomes

[–]pingwax 0 points1 point ago

Always a good idea to get a little confirmation before taking the word of some knucklehead. If you are interested, search for "wet shaving" on the internet. Wet shaving was how people shaved before disposable razors and compressed cans of shaving cream. Some guys have found that razors with 5 blades and cans of unknown goo don't quite live up to the marketing.

Wet shaving typically involves using a double edged safety razor, some kind of shaving soap, and a shaving brush. Honestly, it's probably more trouble than it's worth for most people, but the websites dedicated to wet shaving have lots of good tips on how to shave better.

FWIW, when the situation counts, I use this method of shaving and I will say that it gives me excellent results (very smooth shave, very little razor burn), but it takes time to learn to do well.

Nair will get rid of all the hair; it basically dissolves the hair and you just rinse it off. It will stink; it's a pretty potent chemical. Definitely follow the directions closely if you try it.

If you have hair that lays flat against your skin, how you apply your shaving cream can help with those (especially if they have been softened by the hot water in advance). Instead of just smoothing on shaving cream (or not using any at all), really work it onto your skin like you are trying to get soap suds. The shaving cream will surround the hairs and help pull them up away from the skin.

Another tip that occurs to me is to be careful with how much pressure you use. I don't know how often you typically shave, but shaving gently and carefully with only one or two passes of the razor may not be super effective if you only shave once a week, but if you increase how often you shave, it may work better. Maybe give it a week shaving with only one pass of the razor, but done every other day.

I'm a guy and I'm not sure this will be useful, but some men get shaving or razor bumps. This is caused by a very tight, curly beard hair that gets ingrown as it grows back.

There are shaving creams to address shaving bumps, that work in a similar way to nair, which may be an option. If you haven't tried this, be careful in your approach. Use a small area of skin to start with to see if your skin is sensitive to the chemicals. Avoid using it more than once or twice a week, too.

With conventional shaving, use a good quality shaving cream or soap, take a good hot shower before shaving, don't pull your skin tight while shaving (if at all possible). Only shave with the grain of your hair and don't go over a spot more than twice. In your case, a little stubble is probably preferred over too close of a shave. Rinse with cold water. Using a good moisturizer may reduce irritation after shaving. I personally find that because I have oily skin, a moisturizer isn't necessary, but using rubbing alcohol as an aftershave avoids acne caused by razor burn, small nicks, razor burn, etc.

What are your feelings about raising kids as, for example, Olympic hopefuls, competitive chess players, or spelling bee winners?

Elliptical ---> jogging transition. by NiceGunMrBurtonin Fitness

[–]pingwax -1 points0 points ago

I use an old version of the Sole E55.

edit: I will say that I'm in pretty terrible shape. I'm about 5'9"@200lbs right now, and probably 26-28% body fat. Very flabby. I'm in IT, so I've spent most of the last 20 years parked in front of a computer for 12 hours a day - very sedentary lifestyle.

Elliptical ---> jogging transition. by NiceGunMrBurtonin Fitness

[–]pingwax 0 points1 point ago

I use an elliptical a lot and was getting pretty confident in my endurance. I typically do 2-4 miles on the elliptical 4 times a week and my heart rate is sustained at 160+bpm for 40 minutes. I also walk 2-4 miles a day with the dog. This last week I went with a friend on a 2 mile jog.

First, I found that the resistance level I was using on the elliptical was way below what I experienced running. I used to use a resistance of 8, I'm bumping that up to a 12.

Second, I found that the elliptical had been doing nothing to stress my feet, the fronts of my ankles, or fronts of my calves. Two days later, I still can't flex them without pain.

I couldn't even go half a mile without stopping. My ankles and calves were on fire within minutes of starting. We made it through the 2 miles in about 35 minutes, but I had to stop frequently to let the burn subside before picking up again.

Personally, I'm going to start adding a few blocks of running at a time when I go out with the dog. I don't think it will be hard to work up to a few miles, but I've got a few weak spots to fill in before I'm going to be running for any meaningful length of time or distance. I'm going to try jumping rope, too, to see if that helps some of my weak spots. If nothing else, it's a cheap easy cardio exercise to use in mixing up the routine.

Good luck!

My dad was attacked by a dog and bitten. The dog also attacked our dog. What are the legal actions to take? by HynieSpankerin AskReddit

[–]pingwax -1 points0 points ago

We had a small dog that was an excellent family pet, but very territorial and unpredictable around strangers. One day, my sister opened our garage door, the dog bolted, and ran into a neighbors yard, where a little girl was playing (~3yrs old). She ran up to the dog and grabbed at him, he bit her. He didn't maul her or anything like that, but it was a serious bite and he meant it to hurt.

Our case was pretty bad, having been a small child, but it could just as easily have been an elderly person or another pet. Our dog could have attacked something much bigger and been seriously injured or killed.

We were very apologetic and immediately agreed to their very understandable desire to get the police involved. We were cited with having a vicious dog. The dog was impounded and quarantined by the police until the court date. Fortunately, all of his vaccinations were up to date and documented, which I'm sure avoided a variety of other complications.

The courts took the case very seriously, but were not immediately predisposed to destroying the dog. In our case, we were fined and ordered to take him to obedience school, and prove adequate containment (fences, etc.) We were told that if it happened again, the dog would be euthanized.

So, in the end, a bad situation occurred, we cooperated with law enforcement to address the issue, and we were able to keep our pet for another 10 years.

A dog roaming at large that is willing to attack is dangerous and shouldn't be ignored. It may also be a very important and loved companion to someone; and if it is an elderly person it may be a very important lifeline for them. If you know the owner, a conversation might be the best place to start. Otherwise, I think you should report the incident, but I would do your best to be supportive and compassionate. You may not have a lot of say in the outcome, but your tone and attitude could make a big difference. It already sounds like you are trying hard to be thoughtful about things, so hopefully it will all work out for the best.

How did you remove the gap in the ring to finish it? It seems like that would be hard to do without deforming the ring.

in 25 years I've never had anyone make me birthday cake. my boyfriend baked this from scratch as my very first one!! by SporkyDorkyin pics

[–]pingwax 12 points13 points ago

I baked a cake once for someone's birthday at work. Everyone on the team got served a piece, but after a couple of bites no one ate it. It tasted normal to me, I still have no idea what the problem was, but even after putting it in the break room, it just sat there until it was finally thrown out.

Do you know how bad a cake has to be for no one to eat it? I've seen some of those people slather cream cheese that's been sitting at room temperature for 3 days on to a 2 week old bagel, eat it, and go back for seconds. Holy shit that cake must have been terrible.

Cooking is apparently not one of my talents.

Are the classifieds on motorcycle.com trustworthy? by ogcmin motorcycles

[–]pingwax -2 points-1 points ago

It looks like those same images have been posted on other classified sites over the past couple of years.

I don't know what exactly the mechanism is for these scams (probably a money transfer of some sort), but I don't think that motorcycles.com is any more susceptible to fraud than other sites (e.g. craigslist).

As always, be skeptical and be cautious. If it seems to good to be true...
