I have kind of a reverse question for you... I need to understand my Atheist father by Crumsiein atheistparents

[–]ninekeysdown 15 points16 points ago

WOW! This is a great question! Thank you for asking this!

I've never thought about it like that. Hmm, my kids are way to young for me to even consider this. However their mother did something similar to you. I have to balance this kind of things with my kids and their mother a lot. I can tell you this. People are people. Atheist, Christians, Muslims, Jews, etc. Doesn't matter. If your dad is an asshole he's going to be an asshole no matter what. Now I"m not saying he is. He could be a great guy. Hell, I hope he's a great guy. I like to think I'm a great guy too. However would I be disappointed if my children became religious... I'm sad to say, yes. However that wouldn't prevent me from enjoying time with them. I would love them no matter what. I would respect their choices, tell them why I disagree agree with them and talk to them whenever they wanted to talk about it. I would do the same as your father and not push it.

This goes a lot deeper than just faith though. Ignore his lack of faith and your faith. Find some hobbies to do together. Hell take an awkward fishing/camping trip with him. Go to the shooting range. Play some Starcraft. Learn to brew beer! DO SOMETHING TOGETHER! Opening up a common ground together will make things better for both of you. This is what really matters in the end, don't let something as petty as faith get in the middle of this. Enjoy your chance to learn about your father and grow with him. In time you'll both gain a deeper respect and love for one another. At the end of the day you guys most likely won't share the same beliefs but you will share a bunch of great memories together.

Have fun, take lots of pictures, and be excellent humans. :D

1 modem. 1 house. 2 apartments. 3 floors. many rooms. lots of walls, floors, and ceilings. need wifi. what do? [plz help] [time sensitive] by ghandiburgerin techsupport

[–]ninekeysdown 0 points1 point ago

I've see a few things that have been touched on... doneddat has a great comment. However there are a few more that need addressed.

Let's start with ISP. A lot of them are capping bandwidth and that many people are going to chew though a lot of it. Your best option, and this is besides the point on caps, is that you guys are going to have the same kind of internet needs as a small business. Look into getting business class internet and find out the type of gear your going to get. Now you can settle for putting everything on the same network or having each apartment with their own network. You'll need to talk to your roommates to figure out how you want to do this. PLANNING IS EVERYTHING!

If you want everyone to have their own network then buy static IPs and WIRE the WifiRouters to the Internet/WAN/ISP/etc Router and problem solved. You could perhaps add a 3rd guest network for file sharing, gaming, etc. It's up to whatever your needs are.

If you want one large network then this would be a little easier in terms of file sharing, gaming, etc. However it could get a little hairy if you don't spend the money to do it right. You'll have dead zones, odd drop offs, etc. To to this right you'll need to get one WifiRouter that is wired into the Internet/WAN/ISP/etc Router and place range extenders (Better if you can wire them into the WiFiRouter). This will give you coverage. I saw a post from randomneckbeard that shows a pretty promising setup using unfi. I've never used it so I can't say if it's going to work. I can say that in my experience, short of putting in enterprise class wireless using Cisco APs and a WLAN controller the One Big Ass (OBA) WiFi network almost always has problems.

On a side note: I can tell you about Comcast business internet. That's what I use in a number of locations I deal with and it works. You'll have to pay an install fee that is based on the length of the contract. You can't escape that. For a one year contract it's $199. (BS I know...) For a pack of 2 IPs it's about $15/mo extra. You can't bring your own modem so it's $7 rental fee (More BS I know...) However what you'll get, depending on your area, is anything ranging from 12/2 to a 100/25 connection. Going from about $70/mo to $200/mo. That split 8 ways is pretty damn cheap for that kind of a connection. Even it it were 4 ways you'll still be paying less that most people for that fast of a connection. Plus it's uncapped so you can stream, game, download, etc. all you want.

So to sum up my advice:

  • Get business internet
  • Setup Wireless routers per living space aka Apartments with Static IPs purchased from ISP.
  • Enjoy your awesome new pad

If you have any questions on this feel free to ask me. I'll be happy to help if I can.

[–]ninekeysdown 5 points6 points ago

I love these questions! Okay, so do you want to Learn Linux or just Learn how to be comfortable using a gui in Linux?

If you want to learn Linux Gentoo or Arch. Rolling release distros are the way to go. They are well documented and so long as you RTFM you'll find help along the way. You'll learn the joys of setting up a system that was built for your laptop, because it will be. If something breaks you'll be to blame and you'll have to fix it. This is the best way, imo, to learn any OS. With Gentoo you'll be compiling everything from source. So if you mess up something you're going to waste a lot of time. It teaches to take your time and learn. Arch you don't have to compile everything but you still going to have to pay attention to what your doing. Both distros make you understand WHY you're doing something rather than just follow Steps 1-10. I highly recommend this route if your really serious about learning Linux.

If you're just looking for a way to get comfy with linux on a lower powered system then look for LXDE or XFCE based distros. Unbuntu has a few of them... http://xubuntu.org/ and http://lubuntu.net/ are good starting places. I like XFCE my self.
