"Brothers in Arms"- Possibly the greatest television moment/scene ever conceived by Hawkfanin thewestwing

[–]monty00 0 points1 point ago

Yes it's an important part of the episode rather than just pathetic fallacy. It links up so many aspects of the episode, even his lines about the tender ship in the cathedral.

Chelsea have told Arsenal they want a decision by the end of the week on whether they plan to sign on-loan winger Yossi Benayoun on a permanent basis by redditmyasssin Gunners

[–]monty00 4 points5 points ago

There's no way in hell that Wenger decided not to play Yossi purely because he was on a "pay as you play" contract. That's utter nonsense. If that was the case we're talking about, at most, a couple hundred thousand saved by not playing him a few times. That's not even a consideration for a club of our size, no matter how "tight" the board is.

Also, I haven't read anything about it being "pay as you play" anyway.

When Gervinho was productive, and we had Theo on the other wing, there was no reason for Yossi to be playing.

David Cameron's radical plan to reform jobs red tape - David Cameron is to back a radical plan to rip up employment red tape to help deliver growth. by Kim147in unitedkingdom

It's ridiculous isn't it? 13 downvotes so far for daring to present an opinion that's been backed by the majority of leading economists for decades. The guy asking for proof has as many upvotes as my post providing the proof.

I don't really care about the votes, in terms of my own account anyway, but it's funny that the people on this subreddit think they are so well versed in politics and economics, believing that their political ideology is "smarter" and "fairer" than those they disagree with. But when it comes down to it, they don't care about facts, or genuine arguments. They'd rather I just said "Cameron is a cunt" or "Austerity has failed" than any intelligent argument.

The left in this country shows utter disdain for anyone that happens to disagree with them. The tories are branded as "posh" and "hating poor people" because it's easier than disagreeing with them intellectually. This subreddit personifies the disgusting pseudo-intellectual nonsense that is perpetuated by the anti-Cameron, anti-Tory, reverse-snobbery-ridden bullshit artists that have spent years circlejerking over their ideologies. A 1 paragraph rant about feudalism and the destruction of the working class will get more attention and support than a 10 paragraph explanation of basic economics.

I am currently at -15 on a post saying that reducing minimum wages would increase labour demand. Basic fucking economics, whether you disagree with the other implications of minimum wage or not. You couldn't make this stuff up.

Boeri and Garibaldi, Beyond Eurosclerosis : "the most powerful driving factor behind the increase in labour market flows was the reduction of employment protection legislation" amongst other things

http://www.cepr.org/meets/wkcn/4/4561/papers/Garibaldi.pdf

From the IMF:

http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/wp/2012/wp1264.pdf

"Using a panel of 97 countries from 1985 to 2008, the results of the paper suggest that improvements in labor market flexibility have a statistically and significant negative impact on unemployment outcomes (over unemployment, youth unemployment and long-term unemployment)."

From the OECD:

"Given their high rates of unemployment, the need for reform has been most pressing in European countries. Selected features of reforms in some of these countries have involved reduction in labour costs for targeted groups, greater use of in-work financial support for low-wage earners, an adjustment of employment protection legislation for temporary and/or permanent workers, increased work incentives via more demanding entitlement conditions for unemployment benefits, and product market reforms."

http://www.oecd.org/dataoecd/42/4/2087487.pdf

I'm not talking about a couple of papers here, I'm talking about an academic consensus about differential unemployment rates across OECD countries. I could link to probably over a hundred papers coming to the same conclusion.

How do I know this? I just did a 5,000 word paper on EU unemployment post world war 2.

Just in Europe: http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/statistics_explained/index.php?title=File:MW_map_EUR_Feb_2012.png&filetimestamp=20120215080709

You'll also see that many countries allocate wages based on collective bargaining, which, whilst not an optimal solution IMO, is better than national legislation.

Well, when Terry plays, there are often only 10 players on a team, but that's beside the point...

Labour market inflexibility? Well yes, it's been a burden for decades. It's widely known as the reason for significantly higher levels of long-run unemployment across EU countries compared to other OECD countries.

When the EU countries started issuing labour market reforms, long-run unemployment fell. Simples.

...and to those downvoting because this disagrees with their ideological bias, please see below for proof.

Fairly basic economics that removing (or reducing) the minimum wage would increase labour demand and decrease unemployment. Equally, it wouldn't lead to "massive abuse of the work force" just as other countries who have far lower minimum wages don't "abuse" their work forces.

no, he really didn't. He should have been watching on from the sidelines in a suit, not pretending that he played by wearing the kit and acting as if he'd led chelsea to victory. The man has no shame.

...and yet, one of the top comments in this thread is:

"Because this is not economic, it is ideological. Everything is going according to plan. What preceded 'capitalism' was feudalism and it seems we are going back to that. I suppose slavery in the context of forced labour without pay is creeping through the door too."

Give me economics over this utter bullshit any day of the week. Fashionable ideas are aplenty when all you've got to do is whine about how everything is "unfair".

Why do recipe writers lie and lie and lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? by fermion72in Cooking

[–]monty00 13 points14 points ago

I thought his main point (although poorly made) was that recipe writers try to exaggerate the speed and simplicity of their recipes, with an easy way of doing this being to trim 35 minutes off the "caramelize onions" step.

So many recipe books these days are about "superfast" food...

[Tactics] Mark Hughes' instructions to his players that defeated us (from City '09-10, and replicated at QPR last week) by charzanin Gunners

[–]monty00 11 points12 points ago*

I disagree, we rely on our "rhythm" far more than many other football teams (like Stoke and the rest), the idea being that if you stop us from just passing it around, we never have the chance to get it into the areas from which we can score. Other teams (even ManU) get the ball into dangerous areas much more directly, so rely less on their rhythm of passing.

For me, the most interesting part is the "show them wide and make them predictable" instruction, which still holds true today. Man City did it for big chunks of the game at the weekend, and it's how most teams have beaten us over the last few years. If you've got big defenders who are good in the air, all you need to do is push us wide and wait for us to cross it in, because the chances of us scoring from there are minimal. We've become a bit more direct this season (it's telling that the goal we did finally score was a long-range shot from Arteta, something which would almost certainly not have been attempted by our players in recent seasons) so we're better at dealing with these tactics than previously, but they are still relevant.

The Alan Davies actual quotes on Liverpool not playing on the anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster that are earning him death threats on Twitter by ironmenonin soccer

I realize (and agree with) all the above (I listened to it's up for grabs now when it first came out), I was just pointing out that, when someone says it's an arsenal podcast...well... they're correct.

But you're right, the people pretending that TTC is some sort of scripted panel interview are fools.

I dared to agree with his comments on twitter by saying something similar.

Within minutes I received several messages telling me that I was scum, filth, deserved to die (in various ways, including being run over, committing suicide, or contracting the ebola virus), and that I was a cunt.

Alan refers to it as "the arsenal podcast" at the start of every single episode, so technically, he's correct.
