What i learned from LSD. by trees-and-tricksin LSD

By now the universe should probably have informed you that caring about such things is pedantic and benefits nobody. You should know by now that language is a human construct and that whatever we all are able to understand is correct enough. Are you sure you find yourself in the right subreddit?

Google Chrome is now the most popular browser in the world. by aridon_01in technology

Opera is not worth me switching to from Firefox because it provides nothing I need while losing the freedom that comes from using GPL'd software. In a world without Firefox and other decent GPL browsers, i.e. if it were MSIE and Netscape still, I'd use Opera in a heartbeat.

Make sense?

Your Safari situation seems pretty reasonable.

If I recall correctly, adblock plus on Firefox is different from chrome in that the Firefox version pauses firefox's normal procedures once the DOM of a new document is loaded, and then ads are removed from the DOM before allowing the browser to proceed with downloading other files needed by the current page, I.e. ad images, flash, javascripts, etc.

On chrome, all of that material is still loaded, and then hidden. That means tracking cookies and fingerprinting still goes on, so while you aren't seeing ads, you're still providing a lot of information, which is valuable in its own way.

Correct me if this has changed now, but I certainly like the former approach better.

Quick question about driving by Marsneedsomehelpin LSD

[–]mike_sol 0 points1 point ago

By the time 8 hours in rolls around, you may be pretty close to baseline again depending on the strength of the trip. I would be very hesitant, and factor in personal exhaustion - its one thing if you want to trip at 8AM and drive somewhere around dinner time, and quite another if you've been up all night and are dealing with sleep deprivation.

I would recommend putting yourself through a few tests to ensure your own sobriety. Try the typical pre-breathalyzer cop tests (walk a straight line, alphabet backwards, etc); call up someone and have a very sober conversation with them without letting on in any way that you haven't been sober as a rock all day; and stare deeply at a few different patterned surfaces to make sure that all hallucination has stopped.

Even so, it's on your head, and you should only consider driving in this situation if it's absolutely necessary. Figure out if another few hours is going to cause a problem serious enough to warrant this action. I think you'll probably find that if you think from a more objective viewpoint, it's worth a few bored hours sitting around or napping before heading out.

Also, driving on shrooms sounds like a fucking nightmare, I'm positive I couldn't even get close to doing that, so you're both brave and fucking stupid. Please try to avoid the roads when you aren't sober unless it's an objective emergency that you think a courtroom would agree with.

I can say that Mozilla is a foundation closely associated with all of the generally "good" movements in information techology, i.e. the Free Software Foundation and related groups. The code is not only open, it's GPL'd, and so it's strongly protected as a free work.

Chrome is essentially the free KHTML -> WebKit browser engine started as part of the KDE project and co-opted by Apple quite some time ago. It's a great browser, fast as hell, but I don't know how far I trust Google to completely control my entire Internet experience.

If it is speculation, it's speculation informed by decades watching the computer industry. Companies have personalities, and Google's is currently that of the gentle giant; I don't know if I want him to be my landlord if he ever goes a little crazy.

First of all, if you're looking for sympathy for your mob, don't go insulting other provinces. If you do, you'll find that all of us pay a hell of a fucking lot more for education than you do, and so the students here have no sympathy for your oversubsidized tuition going away anyway.

Secondly, nobody was inside those cop cars when they got set on fire ;)

It's still the only browser that has pure motives.

IE? We know Microsoft's motive with that. They may have done their penance but the horrors IE6 inflicted can never be truly forgiven.

Opera? Perennial also-ran. Great stuff, good company, but not worth switching to.

Safari? Why does this even exist on Windows? On a Mac it's alright, no technical reason to switch to Chrome unless you need an add-on.

Chrome? It's free, I guess, but ultimately it's just a means to Google's endgame where you use all their services, which are also free because of the massive amount of demographic information collected on you in order to more effectively sell your eyeballs to advertisers.

Firefox is true Free Software produced with a mission to help ensure the Web stays open and that developers use Web standards to create a platform that is available to all. Even if it's a little slower sometimes, I put up with it because I believe in the mission.

Updated and loving it! Looking forward to seeing progress on those other issues.

Now, all you need to do is make a guitar hero-like controller case for the iPad with a nice solid mounting bracket, those left hand neck buttons mapped to the bass touch points, and some audio circuitry so that it can be hooked up to a standard PA or guitar amp.

If you spend all of your life worrying about catching up to others, you will never be happy, because it is an absolute certainty that unless you become the next Bill Gates there is always going to be someone around who has more money than you.

Instead, live within your means, and aspire to your level of ambition. Surround yourself with good people who are true friends and take the opportunities life presents you with. Don't be the guy who says 'no' to everything.

Video games are often a waste of time. Fun, yes, but ultimately empty hours spent physically docile growing fat and learning nothing while your brain is kept stimulated by dopamine caused by leveling up or making 'achievements'. It's fine if you're at the airport and need to kill time or have a slow evening with nothing to do - and quite another if you actually think about playing them in advance and spend a lot of your time on them to the detriment of other things. Imagine if you had spent that time working on an instrument or an art-form instead - by now, at ten thousand hours in, you'd be a virtuoso or a master. You've still got a long life yet and could still do those things, but only if you start putting your time onto a creative pursuit that helps you define who you are as a person through the work you create.

Don't know what you want to do for work? You're not alone. The problem is that you do need to work, even if you're not ready to settle into a career path for a few years. I suggest applying for a wide swath of jobs, and getting as many interviews as you can - even for jobs that aren't really something you thought of yourself as doing. Hire a professional resume writer service to help out - there's lots online, or maybe some redditor will do it for you for free, who knows. A good resume and some interview skills learned through just going to as many interviews as you can will take you a long way.

Once you get one of those jobs, work it for at least six months or a year, so it helps build both your resume and your skill set. Keep looking and applying and interviewing often, and you'll move around until you find a place to work where your coworkers are the kind of people that make you want to get up in the morning. Ultimately, that's more important than the work you do a lot of the time.

Lastly, exercise is always a good idea to help keep your mind and body in good shape. Physical fitness usually leads to a happier outlook on life, both because you will look better and feel more confident, and because you'll be healthier overall and will be enjoying a regular dose of endorphins.

Good luck.

I absolutely adore SoundPrism. Seeing as how audanika has an account here and might see, here's some feedback:

  1. An alternative to the shake-for-fullscreen feature would be nice. I miss the side to side scrolling-for-octave functionality from the older version.

  2. Some way to vary the velocity of notes would help make this a much more expressive tool. Perhaps the distance from the note pressed to the active note being played, so that if I land directly on the note it's loudest, and if I'm right of it it's quieter? I know about the orientation tilt sensor sending data but it's not really per-note or very predictable.

  3. Some onscreen controls for mod-wheel and/or pitchbend would be sweet.

Otherwise, Soundprism has completely changed the way I compose melodies, and I really love working with it. It's novel and always blows people away when I show it to them. Kudos on making such a great program!

Sure. Drive up Coast Meridian in Poco until you get to the gun club. Walk up the Burke-Pinecone park entrance trail until you get to the first left turn, proceed down that till you hit a fork, take the left fork. Go straight for a while; you'll know you're on the right track when it opens up to a powerline clearcut swathe. Continue forward and you'll come to a ravine with Pritchard Creek flowing in it; if you head right up the hill a ways you'll find a few spots where it's easy to cross, and then head back down to the trail that was interrupted by the ravine. Proceed forward more; you should find an absolutely mad bike jump that heads up a log on your left after about another 15-20 minutes. At that point you break right; there may still be a small trail saying 'falls'. Head up there for a ways, and at the next fork there should be another 'falls' sign off to the left, after going up a hill. Head down to the left there and just follow the trail; at some point, if all goes well, you should find the huge stump.

Past the stump about ten minutes there's a nice waterfall area which is usually where I turn around.

Total time should be 2:30 - 3 hours.

Let me know if you find it!

So, I taught myself enough to build this website from scratch in about a month. How bad does it suck? by cbimfgin web_design

[–]mike_sol 0 points1 point ago

Should i be considering something like WordPress or Drupal?

You could always reimplement your current CSS and HTML as a Wordpress theme pretty trivially, if you like. To do that, go download the most minimal Wordpress theme you can find, and take a look at it to see how it works in terms of the PHP involved; then just modify it to use your elements and style instead.

Before doing the work, though, it's always good to determine if it's needed. Will anyone be updating the website except you? Is there a need for frequent posting, i.e. a news page someone who deals with marketing stuff might want to update? If so, yeah, go the CMS route.

If not, it's just extra work, so only do it if you have spare time and want to learn.

Site looks good by the way! Might want to add a bit of black space above the logo to push the page down to centre it more on screen, though. I'm not a designer, only a dev, so don't take my word for it :)

Sideways for some reason, but it's showing around an order of magnitude increase (10x) since 1977. My grandma used to tell me a story of how they bought land and built their South Burnaby (Deer Lake) house in the 50s for around ten grand. She died recently, and the house is likely to sell for almost 900,000.

Madness.

There's a stump on Burke Mountain that I estimated at being 900-1200 years old at the time it was cut down. It's easily fifteen feet in diameter. There are other stumps around that are ~10ft, but that one's the big king daddy.
