Well, to be fair, the OP is allowing his parents to dictate parts of his life to some degree. I just believe the mom has a good point. He should pick a school based on what is best for him, not what is best for him and his girlfriend.

Now, if it was him and his wife, or him and his fiance, that would be a different matter. Life long commitment is allowed to affect life long decisions.

No, your mother is right. Understand that you must at all costs choose the perfect graduate program for you if you have any hopes of making that investment work out in the future. This means moving wherever that perfect program is. The two-body problem is not new and you, like so many others, will likely work it out successfully if your partner is reasonable and understands the expectations of academic life and an academic career. You absolutely need to apply to programs that suit you, and damn where they are. Throw the book on this at your mother.

Good points. My best advice is that OP should focus on providing a good life for himself and his son. He has a responsibility now. If he focuses on dating, his life (and his son's life) later on is not going to be as good as if he devotes all of his energy right now into creating a stable future.
