Great photos! It's amazing to see someone undergo such a huge life transformation, and it's sweet to see some rad looking bikes involved in the process!! Congrats to your husband!

Yup. Old, but nowhere near 50+ years old, OP.

[–]elmoustache 12 points13 points ago

I admire your craftiness and the diy spirit, but I'm going to have to be the downer in this case -

I caught a lot of hum/buzz coming through whenever the instrument came in, and it didn't sound like the sound was resonating through the body of the instrument. Sounded kind of thin.

And does it really make sense to use a 3x6-pin strat-style pickups laid out horizontally when you only have one string? Seems like you're just wasting signal or asking for interference.

I can't believe you can't believe it. Would you believe that they still work flawlessly on bikes that are 30-40 years old with little or no servicing?

Dude, that is a champ of a bike. I would snatch something up like that and restore and ride it like hell. Great find, absolutely amazing bike!

Yes, they're 590/650a rims, the original size for the bike. They're Sun rims model CR-18, and i think theyre distributed by QBP or Quality Bike Parts - the corporation that owns Surly and a bunch of other brands. I bought the front wheel complete online from Harris Cyclery (a web search should lead you to the page, I'm on my cell phone and can't find it right now), and had the rear wheel built on the original 1969 hub at my lbs, who also ordered the 40-hole CR-18 rim for me.

Thanks. I love the history and legacy of old Raleighs, so nothing that could be kept was lost in the restoration. The only new hardware is the rims - switching out the heavy steel rims for modern aluminum wheels has really improved both the weight of the bike and the way it responds to brakes. A very worthwhile investment for a bike that's intended to be riddden.

The only parts of the bike that were repainted were the fenders - everything else still has its factory finish, including the decals. The entire bike was washed/scrubbed/cleaned, soaked in an Oxalic Acid solution to remove all rust, polished thoroughly with Turtle Wax Polishing Compound, and sealed with generic Carnauba Wax. One of the nice things about old Raleighs is that they have deep finish, so it's difficult to polish through the finish no matter how much abrasive polishers you have to use to strip off the oxidized layer of paint.

Regarding the decals, they were extremely dry and brittle, so I was careful to not touch anywhere close to them with the polisher, and just applied several coats of Carnauba Wax over them to seal them from further weather damage. Doing some really brought out their colors and made them look a lot more vibrant. I considered clear coating over them with a rattlecan clearcoat but decided against it. If I were to claercoat over the decals, I'd end up doing the whole bike, and I didn't want to mess with it.

For what it's worth, I often wear a helmet, especially when on a long ride or on any routes without bike lanes -

You do know that more people die in cars than on bikes every year, right?

You do realize that the #1 killer of people on bikes is cars, right?

You do realize the #1 killer of people in cars is other people in cars, right?

So how are helmets going to solve what is primarily a problem of people learning to share the road and drive more attentively?

Can I do a paint job that will look fine with very minimal supplies? What more do I need than a brush, sanding supplies, and paint? by bobyhey123in bicycling

[–]elmoustache 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sure it can, but it has to have a clearcoat applied over the top. With the appliance epoxy, you don't need a clear. I just wetsanded and then polished and waxed, and it looked incredible. The paint is super-durable once hardened, and that without a clearcoat.

I've painted several frames, so I know what works.

Go buy Krylon Appliance Epoxy - it's spraypaint used for heavy duty appliances like washers, driers, and fridges. It's cheap (about $8 a can) and can be applied over your bike's current finish. Only comes in 3 colors: black, white, and light tan, but who cares? It will look better than a crappy Rustoleum paintcan.

It goes on smooth, is really durable, and can be wet sanded (1500 grit followed by 2000 grit) and polished, and it will look darn good. I promise (disclaimer: i can't guarantee it, but it's worked awesome for me).

I don't quite understand how a using the same bolt and the same recessed nut in the same location on the bike would add any stresses at all to the bolt...the only argument you could possibly make regarding additional stresses would be that doing so could add additional stress to the fork, which won't be a problem with a steel fork. With aluminum or carbon I wouldn't recommed it. On a steel fork, it works just fine.

Make what you want of the comment, I and many others have run brakes using this trick without ever running into a problem.

It's easy, AND you don't have to drill into your frame! Bad part of drilling is that you'll never be able to go back to a non-recessed/original style brake. Route the brake using the above method, and no permanent/irreversible frame modifications will have been performed.
