Why this game is GOTY for me ( small story of something that just happened ) by hatestepin dayz

[–]einexile 3 points4 points ago

This to me is the mark of a great game: That you guys can approach it from totally different angles yet both be playing fairly and seriously. The different play styles actually act as game content for each other. Most of the great MMOs work this way, and any really good large scale multiplayer: SubSpace, Urban Dead, Red Dead Redemption, Minecraft.

The down side is I can't play thi game without experiencing visions of what it's going to look like in a year or two, when most of the servers are running a bunch of asshole sub-mods that restrict weapon use, enforce "griefing" rules, and god knows what else.

Please don't mistake this as an attack on the OP or his playstyle.

To me, the key to playing evil in an online game is to keep your victims' fun in mind. If they're the sort of people who get bent out of shape over playerkilling, fuck em - but one hopes they've chosen a pk-legal environment for the same reason you have: The thrill of danger posed by enemies who can think and act creatively.

So if you're inclined, be one of the people who gives that to them. But I think it makes you kind of an asshole if you do that just for yourself. Remember that when you open fire on another player, you're doing it for both your enjoyment, not just to lord your skills over some stranger and have a thrill at his expense.

This means picking victims who can fight back, and weak targets only if you suspect they'll have the sense to run. Then they can be spared if they play their cards right. It means making the fight last instead of one-shotting the poor son of a bitch, and if you're going to surprise them you do it with an attack they might survive. You only one-shot another player if his annoyance is outweighed by the spectacle provided for others present.

I think the whole point of a pk-legal game is to experience a variety of situations you would never want in real life. If people approach this from different ways according to their belief systems and temperaments, so much the better. Consideration for the other player as a human being doesn't obstruct this but rather multiplies it.

I don't agree with this at all, but why the hell is he getting downvoted when what he's doing is shedding light on a legitimate and common style of play?

To st31r, I think the point here is that those of us who avoid doing what you do refuse to differentiate between killing for necessity and killing for fun, since at the end of the day you are exposing yourself to that necessity in order to have fun.

As a charter member of the Borehamwood 100, I can tell you with no small portion of authority (!) that yours is only one way of doing things. I'll confess, however that the path of the Anti is a tricky line to walk - and is does require its share of violence, some of it apparently unprovoked at the time.

Blizzard apologises for Diablo 3 launch server problems - they "did not go far enough" preparing servers by zakislamin Games

[–]einexile 3 points4 points ago

Because multiplayer games sometimes have lag, and if you play a multiplayer game by yourself it has the appearance of being singleplayer.

I'm sorry to belabor the point, but if you're playing a game by yourself, and that game features chat, auction house, friend invites, and the ability to form a party at any time, then it's really not a singleplayer game at all.

We've seen this in MMOs and various free-roam action games for years now; it's just new to the dungeon hack genre and these are growing pains.

Blizzard apologises for Diablo 3 launch server problems - they "did not go far enough" preparing servers by zakislamin Games

[–]einexile 2 points3 points ago

The problems were bad, but only because Blizzard was so cocky about the launch. If they'd simply said "hey guys, this might be a little rough, don't stay up for it or take the day off" ... well, we still would have stayed up until 3am and or taken Tuesday off, but we would be pissed off at ourselves instead of at Blizzard.

Honestly it's a small enough offense that owning up to it makes things right as far as I'm concerned. Then again I went to bed at 9 on Monday and had a blast playing Guild Wars all morning.

Hey, don't pirate games! Especially from Blizzard, they never steal from anybody.

The lock-in was kind of nice because it removes the fretting about buying 6 months in advance. If I figure in the price of D3, I'm getting WoW for the price of RuneScape.

I would much rather have a queue than enter my password repeatedly, receive error messages which tell me nothing (especially whether or not I have any hope of connecting), and occasional vague promises that various undisclosed problems will be solved at a time which keep creeping forward.

Anarchy Online wasn't really all that bad. The client was buggy and unoptimized, and the servers went down a lot, but it was playable on and off. They also didn't throw a big fucking party and encourage people to stay up to play in the middle of the night. I played every day. There were even live events.

It's a shame the game received the reputation it did largely because of that, because many problems that plague modern MMOs were solved early on by AO, and it seems no one ever thought to check there for a solution.

It's day one of an enormous multinational release for a game that's been planned for many years, from a company with almost unlimited resources. This is an outfit that dropped half a billion dollars on server upgrades for WoW over the course of a few months. God alone knows what they really spent on this game.

I think most of us have grown to expect problems with big launches, but this one was done with such pomp and celebration that its failure is just plain obnoxious. They pretty much spent the entire evening congratulating themselves for the fact that tens of millions of people were pulling all-nighters in their honor.

If they'd done the adult thing and rolled it out over the course of an afternoon, with a queue system in place - or even just made any admission in advance that it might be rough going - people would not be anywhere near this irritated.

Not this time. As you've read elsewhere, the basic experience is 2 hours long. D3 is a coop dungeon run and loot trading game. Every MMORPG ever made has more singleplayer content than there is in this game.

Is France really hated in the USA ? by SThorin AskReddit

[–]einexile 4 points5 points ago

America here. Don't worry, we love you.

If I remember right, "freedom fries" was something they did in Congress' cafeteria when Iraq was starting up. It was a joke. Yes, a pissy one and based in serious disagreement, but that disagreement was with an age-old friend.

France is like the fellow who holds you back when you want to clobber someone. He's like "no way bro, I'm not gonna let you do this." The fact that the other guy really needs a good clobbering doesn't make your friend a bad friend. Even if he's wrong what matters is he's looking out for you.

People in the US only hate France in the same way that we always have people around who hate the President, hate God, hate the Beatles, hate Canada, etc. In a country of 300 million people, half a percent can make a lot of dumb noise. Even half a percent of the people dumb enough to bag on anyone's country ever is enough to make a lot of dumb noise.

Not really, because here you have a shitton of people who either stayed up late or got up early to play, on a weekday, unable to play a singleplayer dungeon hack because it requires them to log in.

If only Blizzard could come up with some way of allowing us to enter our passwords a single time, and then let us wait patiently to get in. Sort of a "queue" if you will.

There's also no religious exception, unlike homosexual behavior.
