Why are atheists so hated in the USA? by Fucking_Mcfuckin atheism

[–]cujo3017 0 points1 point ago

Not that it matters since your history and reasoning is spot on, but what are your credentials if any? Or are you an amateur (in the good sense) philosopher or just an informal observer of human affairs?

Response to Madonna's half-time show was ageist - Forbes by sexualperfumein celebrities

[–]cujo3017 0 points1 point ago

You're right, although I thought her performance was pretty subdued considering how raunchy her concerts could get and how she liked to provoke controversy. All in all, her dancing was pretty tame; maybe to her, that was a concession to age.

I've become obsessed with my wife's weight by [deleted]in relationship_advice

[–]cujo3017 9 points10 points ago

This is a problem you need to fix, not her.

Exactly. Focusing on her not meeting some ideal that was not part of the marriage contract (unless her weight was specified in a formal agreement).

How would you feel if you were an earnest all around good guy but she was obsessed that you didn't make enough money. And your whole worth in her eyes boiled down to your paycheck.

Having a difficult time breaking through this existential crisis, and beginning to wonder if I am seriously depressed. by awaywethrow1982in philosophy

[–]cujo3017 0 points1 point ago

I wonder if people at the very bottom of civilization, the poorest of the poor who struggle with the very primary function of staying alive every day, suffer from these kind of existential crises.

I say this because I've struggled with these issues for half my life. I've wondered of maybe the "work" of finding food and shelter and avoiding death by a thousand different horrible means is what humans are really designed for and in the absence of these all consuming motivators our minds spin helplessly in unproductive thoughts.

In the end I consoled myself in the knowledge that by luck, I was born in the 20th century in a western country with all my basic needs met and many more creature comforts than even kings and emperors could have imagined in their wildest dreams. We were truly destined to be among the lucky ones in the lottery of life in a fundamental way. Some (maybe most?) of humanity has come and gone from life after a short, brutal, miserable existence. Many people still do.

You know you have to work but I don't know if you have a job that is enough to calm your demons. What you need is a passion for something, some vision or some powerful or compelling quest, or even a hobby, as for example computer games, amateur astronomy, cooking, bowling, golf, politics, gardening, acting...anything that that keeps the mind occupied while still maintaining your obviously rich intellectual life. Otherwise you're like a Smart car powered by a Boing 747 engine.

You don't have to become an atheist. But why wouldn't you. Once you know the truth you can pretend otherwise but why would you want to do that?

You can look up Mary Matlin and James Carvel. She's a prominent republican and he's a prominent Democrat and they've been married for years.

I couldn't do it because I think about philosophical issues a lot and such a wide chasm would put some distance between us.

It depends on how much it matters to each of you. Larry King is Jewish ans he's married to a Mormon and he's fine with that. (Of course she's a lot younger and hotter than he is and she screwed around on him so I don't know how good a Mormon she is.)

Very high heels are biomechanically and orthopedically unsound.

They cause a higher incidence of degenerative joint disease of the knees. This is because they cause a decrease in the normal rotation of the foot, which puts more rotation stress on the knee.

They increase likelihood of sprains and fractures

They can create foot deformities, including hammertoes and bunions, blisters, corns, Morton's neuroma, plantar fasciitis and many other medical conditions.

Not to mention PAIN.

Foot binding and rigid corsets seem barbaric but silly girls have no problem with sky high heels and spanx so they hopefully get some guys to notice them. They became especially popular after the Sex and the City franchise and we all know what good role models they all were.

Birth-control "abhorrent" to Catholics? by see0redin overpopulation

[–]cujo3017 0 points1 point ago

When I was Catholic, I used birth control and so did all my (Catholic) friends. Of course this was years ago before this country got all ''religious''.

If anyone Catholic has a problem with it than they shouldn't use it. Simple.

Complicated situation with new girlfriend. She may have given me herpes but supposedly wasn't entirely sure she had it. by kewtypin relationship_advice

[–]cujo3017 7 points8 points ago

Don't get freaked out about this unless you know for damn sure she was actually unfaithful to you.

People can contract herpes and have no symptoms for an extended period of time. This makes it tricky for either partner know for sure when they contracted it.

Herpes is a royal pain but so is oral herpes and it's just something you have to put up with. It's not disfiguring or fatal after all. Don't make her feel like she has a scarlet letter on her forehead. It's not a moral issue or a moral failing. Be sensible about it. There are some truly cruel, evil, manipulating women out there. What you have is a nice girl who contracted an infection. Put it into perspective and dial down the drama.

How does /r/skeptic feel about the raw milk people? 35 just sickened in Pennsylvania. by jordanlundin skeptic

[–]cujo3017 0 points1 point ago

It was not that unusual for people to get sick from raw milk before pasteurization (children even died) but in those days people died from food borne bacteria all the time. It was like life before penicillin. Shit happened. It's perfectly ''natural" to get sick from bacteria, you know.

My girlfriend has a neighbor who she is friends with and he is creepy. Opinion on what her or I should do? by MichiganBoondockerin relationship_advice

[–]cujo3017 0 points1 point ago

I agree too.

When I was young and nice looking, I was shy and naive and trouble telling people no or confronting them or even disagreeing with them.

Predatory types can smell these types out in an instant and I found myself the recipient of many unwanted advances.

Instead of being sensible and telling them outright that I wasn't interested in them (in a polite way if possible), I would go out of my way to try to avoid these people and so I inconvenienced myself and stressed myself out for no reason.

He needs to tell the girlfriend to get a backbone and draw that line in the sand with him or she may end of regretting not doing so.

Why do people Idol worship? Why does it have such a strong presence in our culture today? by Cyberbroin philosophy

[–]cujo3017 0 points1 point ago

People do tend to confuse the object with what it represents and the line separating the two can be blurry.

For example, you probably wouldn't want somebody pissing on a picture of your grandma, even though, clearly, that's not your actual grandma and there's no confusion about that.

I’m Woody Harrelson, AMA by iamwoodyharrelsonin IAmA

Wow, I was reading a december issue of the New Yorker about an hour ago (in an article about Nicolas Sarkosy) wherein someone called somebody else a "pretentious little prick" and I chuckled at such a nicely put little insult and boom I come across it here...what are the chances.

''Woody's'' AMA? sophomoric and makes him look really out of touch. He probably never heard of reddit and his old style Hollywood press agent heard it was "the hip thing" right now. Too bad nobody told the PR guy to go on 4chan.

In the first place, Monroe never said any of those things. She certainly had her faults but most of her comments were quite modest and often self effacing.

In the second place, SIZE 12, 2011 is a totally different size from when it was back then.

LOOK AT THESE MEASUREMENTS and it's clear size 12 was not what it is today.

This and this and this is what a size 12 looked like back then.

40.7% of the Japanese — incl. public prosecutors — answered that foreigners don't deserve human rights, with their Supreme Court ruling that the UN Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is but a nonbinding "guideline" — interview with human-rights activist Arudou Debito by niceworktherein TrueReddit

Almost all societies are xenophobic to some extent and homogeneous ethnic societies tend to be even more so. Asians are fascinated with westerners and western culture but it's no secret that they harbor discriminatory attitudes toward them. And not just against westerners but against other Asians too, and especially Blacks. Japanese sometimes tend look down on Korean and vise versa. Chinese don't like Japanese much for mainly historical reasons.

By "pets", I meant that Europeans will often be used as status objects, especially in China, where they can be hired just to hang around, or to impress friends.

It's common in a lot of places but the US is so homophobic that it's become awkward. People used to be more relaxed and even sleep in the same bed with friends, relatives and even strangers (at inns) because of convenience/necessity. ''Personal space" can be expensive.

This is true, even as they fawn all over westerners, they don't seem to think they're really quite human, at least not in the same way that they themselves are.

But they make nice looking ''pets''.
