Dear Geico, these commercials are fucking stupid. by pibsktmpballin pics

[–]captjameswest 0 points1 point ago

I think it's actually brilliant. The format is super cheap to shoot, all we hear for the commercial is "geico insurance is good, other insurance is bad", and if you hate it you still remember and talk about it. Win/win/win.

Twenty-two movie characters casually dismissed in sequels by Shadow_Jackin movies

[–]captjameswest 1 point2 points ago

Yeah. At the very beginning of the film it tells you on screen that it is 1935. This is the only real super clear indicator that it's a prequel, and even then you would have to already know that raiders takes place in 1936, only a year after. Indy is a busy guy!

150 empty seats and this is where he sits. by pauloshamin movies

[–]captjameswest 1 point2 points ago

to be fair the best seat (visually speaking) to have in a theater is in the center of the screen in therms of both height and width. ideally your eyes/head should be level and centered to the middle of the screen.

Going back and taking low level film classes can be... frustrating. by lunchbox86in filmmaking

[–]captjameswest 0 points1 point ago

please tell that kid he is just plain wrong. the majority of major films shoot on super 35mm and go through a DI in post.

edit: also, film is still the preferred medium in which to store and archive movies. just a side note.

  1. im sure youre 'paying' for the film (albeit in a reduced rate) with a course fee.

  2. you can buy super 8 film on the cheap, but keep in mind you still need to have that transferred if you want to really do something with it.

edit: get to know your local kodak rep. when i was in film school i would call the rep and schmooze her for free film. most of the time it worked. she would hook me up with surplus film (of course i normally couldnt choose the stock) or film that had been returned for fear of fogging, which i would just use for something i didnt care too much about.

its better to learn on film than digital (at least for part) of film school because it teaches you not to fuck around on set. you have a finite length of film that can be ruined in a second if someone is careless. if you fuck something up on digital, then you have the luxury of just creating a new clip. flash the film and your entire day is fucked.

so took your advice, made a third mashup with it. would love some feedback. by saricciain mashups

[–]captjameswest 1 point2 points ago

the second half is fine enough. my main notes are in the beginning.

at :15 - toss in a mini verse or some sort of rap, feels empty leading up to the break at :23.

at :23 - this is a greatly missed opportunity to change up your vocal pattern instead of just keeping that repeating phrase you have before it. toss something in thats interesting that works.

the rest, as i said is fine enough (for me) it all works well. watch your mixing levels.

as always these are just opinions, take em or leave em. good work!

How do I Koreatown? by billburmanin LosAngeles

go to 'not castle'. its right across the street, less of a line, and has better quality meat imo. its the place with the identical 'all you can eat' sign across western from castle. totes better.

How pop music works by sidemissionchrisin funny

[–]captjameswest 1 point2 points ago

sorry dude. hes a talented guy, im glad he has a good career and i wish him all the best, but im not going to pretend that he is reinventing music. im afraid we are just going to have to agree to disagree.

[–]captjameswest 1 point2 points ago*

i dont think either of us are doing that. KingoftheBrits even says "Bernhoft is great". hes a talented guy, no doubt, i just dont see how having a planned melody in your head is any different than a planned record in a bin. im also not talking about supporting pop djs, more of djs in general. i dont see a difference between using a laptop/controllers/turntables/cdjs and guitar/piano as instruments, but if you want an example of it here you go, or this one if you want something a bit more serene. i think if anything you are discrediting how challenging it can be to dj.

here is a good video of ean golden dicing up some melodies in a dj set and creating something new, much like playing an instrument.

[–]captjameswest 3 points4 points ago

djs loop all the time, its just instead of singing into a mic they use a musical track as their instrument to build on. potato/potato. djs can also do it vocally if they choose too.
