Depressed People Surf the Web Differently by justsayboomin science

[–]burdalane 0 points1 point ago

I'm depressed, and I surf the web randomly. I don't feel like doing anything, so I click around on the web, but there isn't anything I really enjoy, so I click around more, sometimes on the same links.

Ladies - in all seriousness, what would you think of a guy who wanted to be a househusband? by dingobiscuitsin AskReddit

[–]burdalane 0 points1 point ago

If the guy already a lot of money, or I had a lot of money, so that we could both stay at home without working and still live in comfort and luxury, that would be fine.

However, I don't like working, so I would not want to be the sole breadwinner.

BANNED FROM THE USA: Billionaire Facebook Cofounder Could Be Barred From America After Renouncing Citizenship - Business Insider by bullbear420in business

Isn't that from a fictional story?

In this case, the US probably doesn't mean much to Saverin with respect to his ancestry because he was born in Brazil. He lives in another country anyway, so he might as well give up his US citizenship to save millions.

There's been a lot of support for the pretty ladies lately. How about a thread for us ugly sisters? by stickvictimin TwoXChromosomes

I just Googled buckteeth myself. I actually don't have buckteeth, but my two upper front teeth are more noticeable than the other teeth.

There's been a lot of support for the pretty ladies lately. How about a thread for us ugly sisters? by stickvictimin TwoXChromosomes

[–]burdalane 0 points1 point ago

I'm kind of in the same situation with the teeth. My upper jaw seems to be narrow, and my teeth look very crowded. I almost have buckteeth. I didn't bring up braces with my parents because I'm sure they would have said no. In their words, they don't believe in dentists, except for fixing cavities, and I didn't have any.

My dad claims that people don't care that much about teeth, but I think people are less forgiving of ugly teeth than other unattractive features. Many people people say, when asked, that the first thing they look at is someone's smile. That pretty much eliminates me.

What would you do? Failing RAID array... by milacekraisein sysadmin

[–]burdalane 0 points1 point ago

It's not looking very good. All I can suggest is to try to power up and dd_rescue the first drive instead. Other than that, you might need a data recovery specialist.

DAE get really annoyed by people who go somewhere beautiful and exotic and just sunbathe? by Wolfgang_Bearin DoesAnybodyElse

[–]burdalane 1 point2 points ago

I'm not annoyed, but I don't really understand the appeal of lying out in the sun. I can kind of understand if someone wants a tan, but I don't find it pleasant to lie under the hot sun all day. I would at least look around and take pictures.

What would you do? Failing RAID array... by milacekraisein sysadmin

[–]burdalane 0 points1 point ago

We used to have hardware RAID 5 arrays, and sometimes a second disk would start failing before we could rebuild the array. I found that I could turn off the server with the RAID array, pull out the failing disk, plug it into another computer with a fresh disk, and run a dd_rescue. Then I would put the new disk into the array and rebuild. Usually, the failing disks were still good enough to run the dd_rescue.

The IT job survey by grdlockin sysadmin

[–]burdalane 0 points1 point ago

I'm a sysadmin for servers where 10-20 people might have direct logins. Their main workstations are all maintained by someone else. Some of the servers I maintain run web servers or other server software that might have hundreds of users, and if the users have problems, they contact me. So how many users do I support?

Is SysAdmin the soul crushing job that it appears to be? What do you like and dislike about your job? by pirate_plantin sysadmin

[–]burdalane 1 point2 points ago

I have a CS and programming background, and I have a job that involves both dev and sysadmin but has gone more in the direction of system administration. I mostly administer servers, so I don't do things like set up workstations, help users who don't how to use their workstations, troubleshoot printers, etc.

Some of the things that I dislike about system administration are actually pros for other people. If you like solving technical problems, playing with new technology, setting up computers, tinkering with hardware, and being responsible for others being able to do their jobs, then system administration might be for you. I'm not very comfortable with or knowledgeable about hardware. In fact, I have poor mechanical skills and spatial skills, so I have trouble with things like opening an unfamiliar computer, or getting the parts out of a computer. Setting up a system and doing the work to keep it running smoothly just don't interest me very much. I'm more inclined to program, which has more creative potential, so scripting is the most enjoyable part of system administration for me. The other aspects of system administration are a source of stress.

Universal cons of system administration include dealing with incompetent users and management and being on call. I carry a pager and am theoretically on call 24/7 for the systems that I maintain. Luckily, we can run adequately even if some of those systems are offline.

Sysadmins also tend to be kind of unappreciated except when something goes wrong.

My head hurt for two days after doing some boxing sparring, while wearing headgear, against someone smaller than me and not significantly advanced. Of course, part of the problem was that I seem to be incapable of blocking anything after the first jab of a combo, so I kept repeatedly getting bashed in the head in the same place.

Can you be more specific about the actual pay ranges for an entry-level developer or a mid-level developer at an established company? Like, say $50k-60k, or $60k-$75k?

Any non-programming IT professionals who have successfully made the transition to being a coder? by bo_knowsin cscareerquestions

[–]burdalane 0 points1 point ago

What type of sysadmin work did you do -- Unix, Windows, network -- and what did you like about it? I have a CS background, and my job is programming + *nix administration, but it's become more sysadmin than development or coding. I don't really like sysadmin work. I'm ok on the command line, and I can install software, upgrade the OS, manage users, etc., but it's not stuff I really want to do, nor do I have much interest in improving my skills in it outside of work. As for hardware maintenance, I'm awful at anything mechanical. I just can't figure out how to put physical things together, and I don't enjoy it, either. I guess I just don't like to tinker with systems. I'm in a position where my sysadmin skills are not really enough to find a system administration job, but I don't have enough programming experience.

Why can't it be my choice to live or not to live? by Finallythrowawayin depression

[–]burdalane 0 points1 point ago

It literally is your choice to live or not to live. The only real reason, other than fear, that I can find to live is that one day I will die anyway. As much as I dislike life, it's actually kind of embarrassing to be like everybody else and be capable of dying.

After reading your post, I can say that I kind of feel the same way about life. I've never understood how people put up with their lives, not to mention have kids and make them go through life. Ever since early childhood, I also haven't really wanted to participate in anything, and I've never cared about the world around me. Everything is tiring and difficult, with unsatisfying rewards. Starting from 3rd grade, I did well in school, but I've never had any serious aspirations, except for vague fantasies of fame, wealth, and superior talents. Life seems to be a perpetual cycle of working, getting food and shelter, and doing the same thing over and over until death. My only vague motivation is to show superiority (getting better grades was one way), but it's difficult and not that satisfying anymore, especially when in most things, except for academics, I'm slower than others.

One question for you: Why do you care that you have nothing more to give? It might be good for you to stop caring about what people expect you to give.

In spite of his depression, Winston Churchill twice became Prime Minister of the UK and led the Allies to victory in WWII by acdtruxin depression

[–]burdalane 0 points1 point ago

I find it feasible that depressed people, or at least some depressed people, have a more realistic view of the world. After all, mentally healthy people are able to find pleasure from things that seem mundane and sometimes ridiculous when considered objectively.
