TIL that before 1976, Black History Month was Negro History Week, which was created in 1926 with the hope that it would be eliminated once Black history would become fundamental to American history. by kolinskyin todayilearned

Correction: 15% of black folk are caught committing a crime.

In my neighborhood, every time I see someone pulled over by a cop, they are black. Does this mean that black people are the only ones who speed in my neighborhood?

The numbers also show that there a disproportionate number of black people arrested vs the total number of people who commit a given crime. For example, drug users are predominantly white, however those imprisoned on drug charges are almost entirely black.

Lobbyists want Congress to pass a law allowing companies to file secret patents if they're "economically significant" by mepperin cyberlaws

[–]binarytree 4 points5 points ago

This could be a problem if a company is basing their strategy on new technology that may already be secretly patented by someone else. This just doesn't sound feasible. Spend lots of money in R&D, come out with a new product, receive a cease and desist letter, lose money in court battle and sunken costs.

The main concern that these lobbyists have is overseas companies "stealing ideas". Lots of rhetoric about China stealing US inventions, creating knockoffs, etc. Smells like BS to me, I think this is just a way for companies to use US law to lock down the Asian markets.

TIL that in the 60's, CIA field agents would often prank eachother by unknowingly slipping eachother LSD. by the_shit_I_sayin todayilearned

[–]binarytree 0 points1 point ago

Google purchased a project that was funded by the CIA which eventually turned into Google Maps.

So yes, Palantir does not do eavesdropping. There are other programs/companies/people that do that. Eavesdropping is the easy part that they've been doing for years. The analysis is the hard part since they have massive amounts of complicated data sets.

What exactly are you arguing? Palantir doesn't generate its own electricity either--you need to plug the computers into power outlets.

[–]binarytree 0 points1 point ago

Yes it does. It has all sorts of machine learning, data mining and pattern-finding algorithms to alert analysts of specific behavior.

Data is input from various intelligence sources as plugins and then operated on by analysts and agency's proprietary search algorithms.

That is, we do not have an all-knowing, all-seeing, and (most of all) contextually-aware software package for eavesdropping.

They are awfully close with products like Palantir
