ELI5 what a financial bubble is by Sup_Shenanigansin explainlikeimfive

[–]badbrownie 1 point2 points ago

It's all supply and demand. It's hard to know for sure if something is a bubble ahead of time. If it wasn't then they wouldn't form at all. I think the reason people think Facebook might be a bubble is it's valuation vs its profitability. Let's say that this company is making $1Bn/year in profit (I don't think it is but I could well be wrong). Then if you bought facebook for $100Bn then you would take 100 years to break even. This idea is called the Price to Earnings ratio and is a way of measuring the value of the company. If the PtoE goes above 6 or 7 (it would take more than 6 or 7 years to break even) it's generally because there's some other factor involved, like growth of the company is fast, or growth of the sector it operates in is strong. If facebook is a bubble the clearest sign is generally that its PtoE ratio is way out of whack.

Ok, how and why does money 'grow'? If you put it in a bank then the bank is willing to give you more money ("interest" they call it, for some strange reason). But they don't do that because they're generous. They do it because they believe they can use your money to make more money. Enough so they can pay some to you. So - they "invest" it. Which just means that they give it to a company that is making something (like a car) or doing something (like washing cars) and has demonstrated that they can do more of it (and so make more money) if they had more money to hire more people and supplies.

Great. So far so good. Everyone is happy. But what if there's more money trying to find places to invest than there are good investment opportunities? Well, 2 things happen:

  1. the good investment opportunities have lots of offers of money so they can get a better deal (ie, they can keep more of the profits themselves and give back less to their investors because they're considered 'a safe bet')

  2. the more questionable investment opportunities begin to look more attractive. Sure, they're riskier (they might lose all your money or some of it) but they're willing to give you more money back if they succeed.

And so a bubble is formed when there is more money looking for ways to increase itself than there are good opportunities for that money. And that's not sustainable. It will end with people realizing they're making bad bets either because they lose their money or because they see many others losing theirs. So they pull their money out. And suddenly, the things that seemed valuable recently, are suddenly deeply devalued. And that's the bubble bursting.

My brother expressed it as "All women are crazy. But some can hide it for longer than others". He's happily married now though, so here's to him proving himself wrong!

you'll have to explain that to me. I've always understood it to mean "Bison from the city of Buffalo, that bully bison from buffalo, are also bullied by bison from Buffalo". What does it mean with the extra buffalo?

That's a lot of wisdom in only 7 words. Reminds me of the famous (wisdom-less) sentence: Buffalo buffalo, buffalo buffalo buffalo, buffalo buffalo.

[–]badbrownie 1 point2 points ago

Some things I thought I'd never change my opinion on, my opinion has changed. But parents ability to predict the things you'll come to believe (and to perceive objective reality in general) are not as good as they think.

Couple of things I've changed my opinion on:

  • Education is more important than I thought. I treated school like prison and always tried to do the minimum to get by.
  • Drugs should be avoided in general. I was a big fan of many different drugs over time. Now I wish I'd been more productive and less indulgent.
  • My religious inclinations have become dampened and confused

That said, my politics haven't changed much which is the classic example of something your parents assure you will change into their opinions.

ELI5: Why doesn't the same inflation-adjusted income buy the same amount of stuff it used to? by StealthTomatoin explainlikeimfive

[–]badbrownie 0 points1 point ago

I think that the measure inflation itself is a highly politicized thing and not to be deeply trusted. My understanding is that it suits the people in power to not show a lot of inflation so they adjust what is included in measuring 'core inflation' to suit their goals. I know this borders on conspiracy theory and I have nothing to cite for you so feel free to ignore if no-one can come along and rescue me with some facts.

How to get rid of hiccups every time. by dr-angerin LifeProTips

[–]badbrownie 0 points1 point ago

This actually does work. Personally my own version doesn't involve the swallowing. It's all about taking the deep breath and then continuing to suck in extra mini breaths into seemingly full lungs until I'm about to burst.

Problem solved. Every time.

I'm a bit late to the party but I'm going to sum up this whole situation anyway:

For every guy that complains about a loose vag, there's a girl dealing with a small penis.

Of course, the converse is also true: For every girl that complains about a small penis there's a guy dealing with a loose vag.

Not sure I agree that it was as unbelievable as sending Danny Devito to Alpha Centauri! The embarrassing thing is that I know a few things about programming and in my current job part of my role is to size development projects. While this is about how long a program would run rather than would take to write, it's still a bit embarrassing.

I think it's a sign that I don't consider enough candidate moves when I'm playing.

KingsCrusher banned? Knock that shit off. by rhytnenin chess

[–]badbrownie 3 points4 points ago

it's funny. All the pro K-C comments have zero downvotes. Banning him is just silly. I heard the argument that he's pushing out other peoples posts but there are so few worthwhile posts on this subreddit and they just banned the guy who makes half of them.

The r/chess community is tiny and is populated with very few strong players. I couldn't care less what KCs motivations were. He was adding value to this group and it's a group that could sorely use some more value.

Unban him.

My friend got this "parking violation" today. Best one I've seen. by HoofaKingFartedin pics

[–]badbrownie 0 points1 point ago

This 'parking ticket' is at least 25 years old! I remember being tickled by it when I was 16 and buying one and copying it to administer some 'street justice'.

I bought it in San Francisco in '86 or '88. It's funny to see it pop its head up again now.

I'm going to a speech by one of the creators of Deep Blue. What should I ask him? by okiyamain chess

[–]badbrownie 3 points4 points ago

get more specific than "did you cheat?". Ask him about the log files. Kasparov's point was that the log files would have shown how Deep Blue came to decide on the moves it made. He suggested that IBM's unwillingness to share them was, at best, suspicious.
