I've heard "estro-fest"...

It's basically blogs with ads that just link to other content, usually a rip off of another site.

What is the evolutionary reason for crying? by Farmhousefuntimein askscience

[–]antidense 15 points16 points ago

Evolutionarily, it's a demonstration of vulnerability and a plea for help. It's kinda hard to see when you're crying so you wouldn't be able to hurt someone as easily and take advantage of the helper. So, it's a "reliable" or "honest" signal, similar to putting your hands up or visibly putting the gun down in a police encounter. Also, it's a costly signal, as it's (relatively) hard to fake; so when two people are crying about something, they can be somewhat sure the other feels the same way. Honest signaling helps to provide a framework for altruism: the more costly/difficult it is to cheat someone, the more reliable such transactions are. "Tim is crying and not just asking, so he probably genuinely needs my help and isn't just faking it, so I can risk helping him out."

Yeah I've done it that way before on different subreddits. The only issue is that those pages eventually expire, and then no one can add to it. We'll look into it, though.

I should say I JUST added the flair. It should be in the upper right corner under "show my flair on this reddit"

EDIT: sorry, message the mods to add new ones.

I can't speak to the AMAs, maybe another mod can chime in.

I added the flair feature, but I'll have to keep a close eye on it. I'm sure there are more subfields than I'm currently aware of.

I agree, I liked how /r/linguistics seem to be self monitoring before, but now it seems to have fallen by the wayside a bit, perhaps as refugee posts have been fleeing other subreddits that have cracked down on irrelevent topics. I still want to encourage people to learn about linguistics, but in a way that's actually helpful.

We did discuss the FAQ, but we're just waiting on the wiki functionally to be added to reddit.

How do gay genes exist if they don't reproduce to keep them going? by Sev3nin evolution

[–]antidense 0 points1 point ago

  • inclusive fitness: gay people pass enough of their genes through nieces/nephews with provided social support

  • mirror hypothesis: the better you at determining what's attractive to the opposite sex (i.e. being attractive to it yourself) the better you can be at attractive. there's a fine line such that it can be counter productive

  • sexual behavior used in formation/maintenance of social bonds. Bonoboos do this.

  • homosexually/heterosexuality just a result of our binary cultural view of sex where in actuality it has many shades of gray.

I know that penis is not a muscle. by critical_ninjain fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

sure, as long as she did it for herself, and not just to date me.

I know that penis is not a muscle. by critical_ninjain fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

[–]antidense 5 points6 points ago

I believed that once too, I wanted to know "why". As I got wiser it's been one of 3 things:

  • lack of confidence
  • trying too hard to impress/"win" a person's heart à la Disney movie
  • targeting the wrong people

Those are all beneath the surface things, though, and not something a single person that you try to date can pinpoint for you.

Yup, as long as you do it for yourself and not just to impress that one girl.

While I'm glad she was honest, given the complexity of attraction, I think it can be misleading to give a reason why you're not attracted to someone, at least for the younger ones. It can be taken too personally and might give the person the idea that if he would work out 24/7 she would fall in love with him. I think it should be enough to say that the person is not your type.

How do I get over my insecurities? by Hali_in relationship_advice

[–]antidense 0 points1 point ago

I don't know if it's "normal", but it definitely seems unhealthy. Some suggestions:

  • when you feel that way, write it all out to yourself or vent with someone who would be willing to listen. Just don't keep it all in your head. Maybe some exercise would help, too

  • set some weekly guaranteed together time with your bf?

  • think about some underlying issues that you might not be addressing in your relationship that maybe making you feel this way?

Plenty of people live in small towns/rural areas where there's only one or two pharmacists. Plenty of people in bigger cities can't afford transportation.

Is Bioshock 2 just as awesome as the first? by curlyfries10in Bioshock

[–]antidense 1 point2 points ago

Is the ending of 2 any better? The bioshock one seemed a bit meh, and the final boss seemed kinda easy if you just stratagized a bit. Still loved the game, though.

Then you'll result in a situation where birth control is effectively a ban if no one is willing to sell it, and the burden is to high for the patient too seek care elsewhere.

Sure, but should you have a right to refuse someone who could die because saving them would interfere with some crazy belief of yours, and you're the only one that could help them?

Kansas Governor Signs Bill Allowing Pharmacists And Doctors To Deny Women Birth Control by gatorslapin politics

[–]antidense 5 points6 points ago

You know, I went into the profession knowing that I would have to put aside some of my preferences and ideals aside in order to care for people that are different than I am. In essence, it goes with the territory, and I made that sacrifice to do something I love doing: caring for people. It really burns my balls that people would get off the hook for their beliefs because they are in-line with a currently politically popular religion (fundamentalist Christians) while so many people of other ethnic backgrounds, religions, beliefs have had to make harder choices for decades.

It's also been discussed so many times before: once you start making exceptions for some people then to be fair you'll have to make exceptions to the point where system falls apart. But even then it's still not fair, because some people require less costly exceptions than others. Or you end up with an over-encumbered system that doesn't work for anyone.

Seems like we've already sort of came up with the solution: you should know what you're getting into before going into it and be willing to make those sacrifices. Hopefully your colleagues would cut you some slack and you can return the favor, but ultimately patients should not have to suffer lack of care t the expense of the beliefs of their caregivers.

Same here. I feel like I'm crazy for not being interested it in. I can appreciate that it's likely a good game, but it's just not my type. I may try it eventually, but definitely not at the price it's at now.
