Studying for finals, we wanted a break. I suggested we take this smoke bomb I had and toss it into the local Greek owned variety store. More Greeks poured out of that store than I though possible. They came on foot, they came in cars. A dozen of them. I'm running down the street, in my neighborhood, a Greek kid about my age right on my ass. I'm running so hard I later realize I had shit myself. A car full of Greeks is pacing us, a Greek is hanging out of the car window screaming "stop and we won't kill you."

About this time I remember a place where two properties didn't quite meet at their corners, and there was a single strand of barbed wire spanning the gap at about chest high. I turned into the driveway of that house, and headed for the gap. The Greek kid had fallen behind a little but he was still chugging, right behind me. I go thru the gap, duck under the wire and I feel for the wire. It's still there. I go a few more feet, then I stop and hide in the bushes, wait for the Greek. He comes in, breathing like a bull, and hits the wire at a full run. I hear a thud, then a groan. I lope off towards home.

I still see that guy sometimes. Now he owns that store.
