So basically...NBC stole Community from Dan without so much as a warning. Season 4 is getting really hard me to support, I don't know about the rest of you.

Community is Dan's baby. I'd rather not have a fourth season than a season without Dan. It doesn't feel right.

(spoilers all) Opinions about Theon by ackewa01in asoiaf

[–]JamEaterBlues 4 points5 points ago*

I am a bit upset by the fact that so many people dismiss Theon is "a dick". I feel like i've been discussing him a lot recently, maybe because I can't stop re reading his ADWD chapters.

While most of the ASOIAF characters have sort of devolved and become more bitter/angry/power hungry, Theon has actually turned into one of the most genuine and dare I say "kind" characters in the series, which is interesting given how cruel he could be in ACOK. What I love about him is that he's had all of this time and suffering to think, and has REALLY owned up to what he did.

Moreso, people forget that while he did cruel things (his treatment of women, the hostages at Winterfell, the miller's kids) betraying the Starks wasn't one of them. Theon was treated decently by the Starks, but he mentions that the only one he ever loved was Robb, that everyone else was completely cold to him, and that even Robb hardly smiled at him. He remembers being terrified of Ned and even suggests that he believed that Ned was cold to him because he knew that one day he might have to kill him.

Despite this, he WAS loyal to them for a time, and seemed to experience a sort of stockholm syndrome. Because we as readers love the Starks, we end up experiencing it with him, totally ignoring and not caring about the fact that they captured him, murdered his family, and basically uprooted his entire life.

Here are some quotes regarding Winterfell, where you can see him opening up to the fact that what he did was horrible and wrong.

“But the yard held darker memories as well. This was where he had assembled Stark’s people the night Bran and Rickon fled the castle. Ramsay was Reek then, standing at his side, whispering that he should flay a few of his captives to make them tell him where the boys had one. There will be no flaying here whilst I am Prince of Winterfell, Theon had responded, little dreaming how short his rule would prove. None of them would help me. I had known them all for half my life, and not one of them would help me. Even so, he had done his best to protect them, but once Ramsay put Reek’s face aside he’d slain all the men, and Theon’s ironborn as well.”

“Ned Stark’s sons are all dead, Reek thought. Robb was murdered at the Twins, and Bran and Rickon … we dipped the heads in tar … His own head was pounding. He did not want to think about anything that had happened before he knew his name. There were things too hurtful to remember, thoughts almost as painful as Ramsay’s flaying knife …”

“Theon,” a voice seemed to whisper. His head snapped up. “Who said that?” All he could see were the trees and the fog that covered them. The voice had been as faint as rustling leaves, as cold as hate. A god’s voice, or a ghost’s. How many died the day that he took Winterfell? How many more the day he lost it? The day that Theon Greyjoy died, to be reborn as Reek. Reek, Reek, it rhymes with shriek.”

Winterfell was full of ghosts for Theon Greyjoy.”

“Theon Turncloak,” someone said as he passed. Other men turned away at the sight of him. One spat. And why not? He was the traitor who had taken Winterfell by treachery, slain his foster brothers, delivered his own people to be flayed at Moat Cailin, and given his foster sister to Lord Ramsay’s bed. Roose Bolton might make use of him, but true northmen must despise him.”

“Why did I come here? These are not my gods. This is not my place. The heart tree stood before him, a pale giant with a carved face and leaves like bloody hands.A thin film of ice covered the surface of the pool beneath the weir-wood. Theon sank to his knees beside it. “Please,” he murmured through his broken teeth, “I never meant …” The words caught in his throat.”

“False is all you were. How is it you still breathe? The gods are not done with me,” Theon answered”

“He was trapped here, with the ghosts. The old ghosts from the crypts and the younger ones that he had made himself, Mikken and Farlen, Gynir Rednose, Aggar, Gelmarr the Grim, the miller’s wife from Acorn Water and her two young sons, and all the rest. My work. My ghosts. They are all here, and they are angry”

Characters learn. Characters grow. Most ASOIAF characters seem to sort of go to opposite route that Theon has. They become MORE savage. I wish people would give him more credit. I believe personally that finally being as low as a human can be gave him (among many things) a lot of perspective into his own cruelty and past sins. Blame him for whatever you want before ADWD, but also understand that people change, and just because he was an unrepentant dick before doesn't mean that is who he is now.

Out of all the characters, which would be the best king/queen possible in the series? Mark spoilers as you see fit. by christhetwinin asoiaf

[–]JamEaterBlues 4 points5 points ago

Sansa and Tyrion, but let's focus on Sansa for a moment, because Tyrion's qualifications should be a given.

The biggest problem with all of the previous kings/Westeros leaders is that they were largely unfair and un empathetic to the common people. They desired power, but had a hard time seeing outside their own self gratification. In time, Sansa would make an unquestionably strong leader. Consider the following:

  • Littlefinger (who is more or less the Westeros most crafty strategic genius) is her current "mentor"

  • She was able to get a front row seat to Cersei's fall from grace and what mistakes a poor leader makes. I will never forget ACoK where Cersei is trying to feed her a steaming pile of shit and she thinks "If I ever become queen, I will make them love me". She's suffered enough to know what it's like to be powerless, and she's seen what happens when a person abuses their power.

  • Following on that, she has the ambition to rule, but she doesn't crave power and control. When she's entertained the notion of power, it's been to better the realm, as opposed to gain something for herself.

I truly believe that whoever ends up controlling the Westeros shouldn't be someone who wants it so desperately, which is why I think these two would be perfect.

SO MANY, but the one I get the most shit for is Whitney. I started watching it as one of those "background" shows, but as an adult woman in a long term term/unmarried relationship, I found myself relating to it a bit and began to enjoy it. The last few episodes have been...disturbingly enjoyable for me. If you have to say one thing about Whitney, give it credit for the accurate little details. It can be fun, even if it isn't objectively good.

(Spoiler All) Most tragic character in the series? by riceisright56in asoiaf

[–]JamEaterBlues 28 points29 points ago*

Theon Greyjoy. I know a lot of people aren't crazy about him, but it's so hard to even consider giving the title to any other character, especially after ADWD.

He was given up by his father at an early age and forced to live along the very same people who murdered his family and people. He grew up among these people desperately trying to fit in and carve a place for himself, but was always considered a ward no matter how chummy he got with the Starks. Meanwhile, you have this horrible personal identity crisis going on in his head. He's not a Stark and by all accounts a prisoner, but he isn't quite a Greyjoy either. That's a really fucked up head trip for a little boy to deal with.

Then he finally comes home, completely psyched about being welcomed and adored and loved again, only to find out he's been replaced and forgotten. Theon's entire story is based around his severe identity crisis...so what does GRRM do?

He takes him, brutalizes him beyond recognition, drives him mad, and completely strips him of any identity at all; to the point where he is literally splitting his experiences into different people. At this point, it seems like he is certain to die, and there is no resolution at all to this issue beyond his illusion of being recognized by the gods as the conflicted Theon. He's still heavily traumatized and probably mentally incapable of functioning independently. It's like some horrible painful irony that he is being sent to die gripping onto the last tiny shred of who he is when he spent the whole series looking for what was beyond that.

I think what is shaping up to be a backhanded resolution to his original woes is the ultimate tragedy.

It makes me uncomfortable. I think I am actually banned from it because I disagreed with something one of the old mods said. There are a lot of good people there, but sometimes I feel like the subreddit can reflect the worst parts of the movement. In my earlier days of Reddit I really hated it based on what I saw. Maybe it's changed now?

It's really very weird, because a few years ago, I would have disagreed with you a lot. My best exposure was my own friends and family, as well as the TwoX ladies who are usually very nice people. Then I started checking out Tumblr, and things like SRS and the like. My first instinct was complete disgust. You know there is something wrong with a movement when you want to disagree with people that you'd otherwise be on the same side of.

I am a female myself, but I've frequently been called "sexist", or apparently I have "internalized sexism" when i've pointed out that men also face social/political problems that shouldn't be ignored...or any time i've pointed out that while it isn't as common as rape, false rape claims DO exist and we can't just go convict and hang people who are accused on rape without physical evidence.

I know both subjects can be sensitive, but it's crazy that such an us vs them culture exists around feminism (and MRAs of course, but let's stay on point) ....like if you stand up for men at all you are ignorant and self hating..and not doing enough to stand up for women (which is assumed offhandedly). I consider myself a feminist in the very basic sense of the word, and I am beginning to get really weary of the reactionary culture that exists in most modern gender equality circles.

You know, when you think about it... by Primetime22in community

[–]JamEaterBlues 38 points39 points ago*

In 1x25 it is mentioned briefly, but it is also in her official NBC character bio in more detail. Sh was raped/or molested as a kid and her dad let the guy get away with it.

“What is this exactly? I should tell you about myself? There’s a word for that. Deposition. Here’s some other people I have to “tell about myself:” Internal Revenue. Police. And on my eleventh birthday, an eager-handed man in a dinosaur costume whose side my father took when I told the owner of the restaurant. After I tell you about myself, then what, then you know me? ”

She probably has one of the most fucked up stories on Community, but I think it's a little heavy to mention it directly. It would be enough to warrant her trust issues with men I think.

What are your thoughts the Annie/Jeff by vinaydesai91in community

[–]JamEaterBlues -1 points0 points ago*

I am pretty sick of it. I think of all of more popular group dynamics, these two have the least interesting chemistry, as it always seems to center around their sexual tension as opposed to a more complex relationship.

I feel like it's something out of a tween show. I remember a few times when Dan likened Jeff/Annie fans to being young girls that wanted to fix and date a hot older guy like Joel/Jeff. I love Annie, but I feel like when it comes to Jeff, she isn't so much interested in him as a person as she is in him as an experiment. She has totally different romantic aspirations than he does, but she still holds out hope that she can be the dream girl that comes in and changes everything about him.

I'd rather see Jeff with Britta. I like that they have come to accept each other for who they are. I'd also like Abed/Annie. I was sold the minute Dan said that "Abed sees Annie as a creature of grace". No romances would also be fine with me.

Reddit users, what double standards do you hate the most? by PineappleBunsin AskReddit

[–]JamEaterBlues 26 points27 points ago*

I never understood why that had anything to do with it. In that case, really ugly fat chicks who manage to get laid a lot would be congratulated, and gorgeous men who get laid all of the time would be called something equal to a slut, but it doesn't work like that.

But hey, nevermind that. Why does it even matter how hard it is to get laid? That doesn't make it appropriate to shame one gender and congratulate the other. You want to get laid more? Stop making women feel dirty about banging you.

I feel like the whole key/lock thing is really just an excuse for people who are less bothered by the stereotype to excuse it away.

He's an 18 year old with an incredibly powerful voice and fantastic pitch, and as I recall, he taught himself SEVERAL instruments as a child. He is actually pretty exceptional (I'd argue that he is a musical prodigy as someone who is classically trained myself) I think the most impressive thing about Bieber is that his voice is as strong as it is in his youth and doesn't require any editing. Check out his little home made youtube tapes from before he was famous. Had he never gotten famous and someone posted them, I have no doubt Reddit would be saying things like "this kid is gonna be a star one day"!

When you are young, especially in your mid to late teens, your voice goes through a lot of really problematic changes. This is a huge problem for boys mainly, but it can be an issue for girls too. It's really rare to find young men who are that exceptional in Bieber's age range because a lot of them haven't fully developed vocally.

How I Fell for Cersei Lannister (spoilers: all books) by asoiafthrowawayin asoiaf

[–]JamEaterBlues 13 points14 points ago*

I think it's not so much upsetting that she is comfortable with her sexuality as much as it is she is more or less cheating on Jaime. I say more or less because their relationship is obviously NOT traditional, but there is definitely an understanding between the two of them. They are supposed to be in love. Jaime hasn't so much as looked at another woman despite the fact the he is a "single", attractive man. All he thinks about is running away with Cersei and being happy together. Cersei was forced to be with Robert because she had no choice, but she claimed to love Jaime the same way they he loved her. It's pretty clear that despite not being able to "Date" or marry, the two functional as a couple...hence why Jaime felt betrayed when he found out she was sleeping with other people.

Her willingness to be unfaithful to Jaime so carelessly made it apparent that she really doesn't have as much emotional investment in him as he does her, and that she really puts little stock in his feelings. It was just another instance of her cruelty, which is amplified by the status of their relationship and the fact that he is supposed to be the only person in the word that she actually cares about (save her children) It's one more thing that proves that Cersei is selfish, and that her feelings towards other people directly relate to how she can benefit from them.

What video game do you think was, and still is, ahead of its time? by WtfWhereAreMyClothesin AskReddit

[–]JamEaterBlues 1 point2 points ago*

I'm sure most of you haven't played it, but there is a little JRPG called Legend of Mana that came out for the PS1 years ago, around the same time the Final fantasy games were a huge deal. It was one of the first open world games, if not one of the first for counsel. It was released in 1999. Some of the features:

  • Several related/unrelated quests (50 something in all I think?) spanned out through different parts of the map.

  • The game evolved and reacted to your choices. You could finish a random side quest in a random part of the map and it would completely impact the structure of the world or the way that certain quests would carry out. Unlike many games, even the side stories are sensitive and reactive to your choices.

  • You could farm your own crops, find, raise, and keep pets that could grow to become your friends, create your own custom weapons that could be infused with countless different combinations, and create your own magic spells (again, with countless names, effects, and damage ratios)

  • While the final outcome of the game way always the same, there were 3 "main" storylines that lead you to that point (you could do one or all 3) and depending on your choices, those people will have happy endings or never have their needs met. This could be very frustrating, as one wrong move could halt your quest forever.

  • You can take several different characters with you as companions, and most of them had their own story lines that you could complete.

  • You could travel through the map whenever you want, activate new parts of it depending on the quests you complete, and many of the areas within the map will develop new quests when you revisit them later down the road.

It wasn't a perfect game by any means, but I look back on it now and i am really shocked at how a lot of these things are only starting to become the norm in big RPGs. It was very much a pixilated morrowind, with maybe some different features and a less complex world. The funny thing was, when the game was released, it wasn't very well received, and it was criticized specifically for these open world qualities and not being linear enough. I guess maybe the second part about STILL being ahead of it's time may not quality anymore, but it was doing all of the things that popular RPGs are just starting to figure out sell, and got a real lashing for it.

I disagree on one front. A Clockwork Orange would be a great remake. The movie was really good and all, but it was so inaccurate, and completely erased both the characterization and moral point of the original book. I'd love to see a more book friendly version of the story come out.
