What he's saying is the suburban/commuter culture is a problem because it forces the use of fossil fuels to shuttle us to and from work.

On the flipside, highly mobile societies mean we aren't geographically limited in where we can work etc.

In the end, companies should be happy to allow telecommuting unless the job really needs face time. The internet could solve all these problems in many cases.
