Occupy Movement: Chileans take to the streets with calls for a radical overhaul of the country's for-profit university system by SolInvictusin worldnews

"The problem I have with OWS is that..." posts that then proceed to repeat the same stupid bullshit that has been posted and discussed to death still regularly get upvoted

Redditors are pussies, and masturbate over posts which argue any point in a non-confrontational way - being non-confrontational ensures more upvotes than substance, intent or validity of an argument

Why should customers care or even know anything about a particular place and chef? This is a lot of unwarranted importance you are extending to fucking chefs.

Not knowing something about food and not caring about it too much doesn't make you stupid. Stop being a snob.

If they won't give donated livers to alcoholics, what's up with giving hearts to fat people? by StuckInDallasin AskReddit

lol no, effects of alcohol withdrawal are so extreme people can actually die from withdrawal. it has nothing to do with availability. as i said, most people don't understand what real alcoholism even is, because the word "alcoholic" is thrown around so easily, especially by americans. google it or something

How hard it is depends on whether you're a real alcoholic. Most people who drink a lot aren't. Alcohol is actually easier to quit than cigarettes if you just drink it because you choose to (like people who drink because they are unhappy, or bored/frustrated), or have a craving.

But real alcoholism is worse than even heroin addiction. It is probably the drug that is the hardest to quit on your own once you have a real addiction. Some people also seem to be immune to alcoholism, and never form a real dependency. My grandparents used to drink daily for decades; my grandmother became an alcoholic, while my grandfather, who drank more, easily quit once problems with her alcoholism started. He missed drinking but he had no withdrawal symptoms. On the other hand, she had to be hospitalized for the first month or so because she was in danger of dying or murdering someone (she had tried to murder my grandfather with a knife simply because he wouldn't let her have a drink). It had very little to do with willpower, and more to do with how their nervous systems were differently affected by decades of drinking.

lol so what if I do pretend to be "trustworthy" on these matters and "betray" them? Oh wait, that's exactly how the police sets up both pedophiles and drug dealers. Misrepresenting yourself to criminals and fucking them over is perfectly fine. For some reason you seem to think that criminals deserve loyalty and honesty. LOL

Also, to check whether you even believe in your own ridiculous argument in the first place: a pedo who is in a child raping pedo ring decides to come clean and fuck over his fellow pedos, poor pedos who trust him and have been loyal to him. Is he a bad guy? he was "trustworthy on the matter of pedophilia" LOL I can't believe how stupid this is

So, the question for a scientist is if you where inside a small hollow chamber inside a planet sized mass (that for whatever reason is inhabitable by a human, besides what may be the effects of gravity, what exactly would that be like? What would that be like for you, gravity-wise? by [deleted]in askscience

[–]HugeFuckingRetard 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Imagine every tiny little piece of Earth having its own separate gravity. When you're on the surface, all the pieces are under you, pulling towards the center, with the lateral components canceling out. When you are somewhere inside, some of the pieces are pulling you towards the center, some are on the other side, pulling you away. When you're in the exact center, they're all pulling you away from the center, but they're all also cancelling out. This is the simplest way I can think of to explain it.

It is a very simple mathematical consequence and I don't see much "organic" about it. It is also not specific to gravity.

For me, statistics like these are perfectly good even with no context, because they should have complied with exactly 0 requests from the police that weren't backed up by court orders. They should also post the requests publicly, without removing any information, so everyone can see who is trying to censor what.

Ideally, they would also send funny responses to those requests and post them online for us to laugh at, but that's just a bonus

But how does this matter? It is still just as stupid to believe in the less likely explanation. This is why the argument is a red herring.

I will repeat something I wrote in another comment - a coin could land on the edge instead of one of the sides, but it's still dumb to think that coins land on their edges.

I agree that you should keep an open mind and always be ready to change your opinions if new evidence emerges.

I still don't like this argument because it is basically an attempt to equalize legitimacy of different theories because "you can't be sure", completely ignoring which theory is supported by evidence.

Or to put it simply, if A and B are mutually exclusive, and evidence suggests A is 99% likely, it may be incorrect to be certain in A, but it is still entirely irrational to believe in B. The fact that I don't consider many things impossible doesn't mean I don't consider people idiots for believing they are true - because it is simply irrational to believe something is true if evidence suggests otherwise. Absolutes have nothing to do with this.

It is kind of like believing a coin will land on the edge when you throw it. It is not impossible, but you're still an idiot if you think this is the most likely outcome, or are even convinced that is what's definitely going to happen.

Arguing in such absolutes is unscientific in itself and is the domain of people whose thinking is guided by emotions and the desire to find confirmation of views they already hold, instead of a genuine desire for knowledge.

Arguing absolutes = red herring. If of two theories evidence overwhelmingly suggest one is true, a rational person will consider that one more likely, otherwise they are not rational. Certainty is irrelevant.

Parental self-righteousness and sensitivity is one of the biggest problems in education. My parents are educators and it seems like it's often harder to deal with the parent than the child.

Kids can accept that they did something wrong and can be reasoned with. A parent will never ever accept that they are doing something wrong when it comes to their child. They are incapable of accepting even the slightest possibility that they are not the best at parenting. The amount of denial is insane.

Of course, the better a parent is, the less annoying and self-righteous they tend to be, I guess it's a way to compensate for the suppressed feeling of being a failure as a parent.

No, KallistiEngel is right. You are insisting on using the colloquial meaning of the word "decade" even though the correct meaning makes more sense in this context.

It's like saying something that happened at 16:58 happened "an hour ago" when it's 17:03.
