How do you practice mindfulness in a negative setting? by ccrangin Buddhism

[–]Concise_Pirate 1 point2 points ago

Fear of feeling bad about oneself is a reason for refusing to admit what one is doing that isn't working.

By abandoning judgement, we free ourselves to accept that everything is how it is -- and then we are free to take whatever action(s) we choose.

My neighbors are assholes. by tdabitin sandiego

[–]Concise_Pirate 1 point2 points ago

That is not the idea. There are completely separate laws requiring apartment buildings to include parking proportional to the number of apartments. (In fact, the affordable-housing advocates say, too many parking places.)

Upvote for civilization. This is very reasonable.

I love this question.

Personally I try to identify one thing that's really particularly pissing me off, and remind myself that it's a legitimate thing that really exists -- and that it's begging for my attention, like (pardon the metaphor) Buddha tapping me on the shoulder quite strongly and shouting "Hey! Notice!" In other words, it's a gift of awareness.

When exposed to sunlight, does a moving object generate more or less heat than a stationary object? by hospitalvespersin askscience

[–]Concise_Pirate 2 points3 points ago

The movement of the object is negligible, approximately the same as zero, with respect to the photons. A photon goes 300000km per second, whereas a car goes far less than 0.1 km per second.

Therefore there is no perceptible effect on temperature.

I agree with your headline.

I do not agree with your text.

How would a purely capitalistic market alleviate the problems associated with poverty? by BookwormSkatesin economy

Can I be really frank? Debate with someone who's really strident sometimes makes people just say "the hell with it" and stop trying to make their case.

Selling the Pared-Down Life: the house of the future may be a 420 square foot (39 m2) apartment by Concise_Piratein architecture

[–]Concise_Pirate[S] 0 points1 point ago

What's remarkable isn't that someone has an apartment this size; it's the high quality of the space (look at the slide show in the article).

It seems to me you are not interested in objectively discussing the issue, but in making a point.

UC regents discuss 6% tuition hike for next fall. Regents also approve the hiring of a new chancellor for UC San Diego at an annual salary of $411,084. by secaa23in sandiego

I don't know. While we're at it, shall we make up other things she hasn't done and discuss whether she'll do them?

Can a bomb explode in space? by 3yrlurker2ndacctin askscience

[–]Concise_Pirate 1 point2 points ago

Incorrect. Before the first bomb was built, there was a minority fear that this could somehow happen, setting the whole Earth's atmosphere ablaze. In reality, the fission is mostly limited to the highly unstable fuel (uranium, plutonium) in the bomb.
