Michael Williams best in District 25; Lamar Smith for District 21 by EquanimousMindin testpac

[–]7oby 2 points3 points ago

Republican voters in District 21 should support U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith.

...

SOPA motivated one of Smith's Republican opponents, software engineer Richard Morgan, to move to Austin to run against him. Morgan struck us as a thoughtful, informed young man. He not only spoke eloquently and reasonably about technology issues, but also about immigration and education, among other topics.

We can't say how transient a candidate Morgan is. But if his political interests carry beyond this primary and needling Smith on SOPA, he just might be a future candidate to watch.

So... you like him, but he doesn't have the "executive experience" or whatever bullshit metric he won't live up to, so maybe next time, when he still doesn't have the experience because he didn't win because last time he didn't have that experience.

Really, I never understood that one.

s3e22 Introduction to Finality was the lowest watched episode in the history of community! Not cool, not cool, not cool. by Rtrohdein community

For the breakdown:

  • Community (2.97)
  • 30 Rock (2.84)
  • Community (2.61)
  • Community (2.48)

Was there any indication that there would be 2 more episodes at the end of the episode aired? I watched on Hulu.

It's very possible NBC ordered the firing

TIL Yelp will remove positive reviews if you don’t pay them by ltdanaintgutnolegsin todayilearned

[–]7oby 1 point2 points ago

There used to be two 1 star reviews, I see the one you're referring to. But it is still lame that seeing filtered reviews is so difficult, and it's not even obvious that reviews are being filtered. When Google filters results, they make it plainly clear.

[–]7oby 3 points4 points ago

Really?

Do you see any reviews here?

http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-ludwig-von-mises-institute-auburn

How about if you click 'read 2 filtered reviews' at the bottom, below everything else, not even in the review area (where you'd expect it) and type a CAPTCHA to see them for some reason...

http://www.yelp.com/filtered_reviews/hqv3MRVh4hDsrBWLByCo0A?fsid=I2zlV09IyZt2RogEWB89Sg

There used to be two 1 star reviews on the page (before viewing filtereds) from people who hadn't been just ragging on the ideology. Now there's no reviews and the five stars are 'filtered'.

Ask your "developer friend at yelp" about that.

Update from the guy who thought his wife was cheating on him in Michigan by houndsounds424in relationship_advice

[–]7oby 9 points10 points ago

The downvotes don't come with explanations, so I'll break it down for you: if one of them catches an STD and spreads it to her husband, that's something that could be prevented by warning. People have even posted here before "I caught an STD from my partner that they got from cheating on me!". Or, they could get pregnant! And then he'd be taking care of a kid he's not really responsible for producing, maybe an eventual divorce would mean he'd be paying child support for a kid that isn't his.

None of this is fair and it's all preventable by a simple heads up.

[–]7oby 12 points13 points ago

Are you kidding? If you catch a kid doing something they shouldn't be doing, they'll say "but (such and such) does it!". It's why parents say "If (such and such) jumped off a cliff, would you do it too?"

She's pointing out that it's not so bad because the other wives are cheating too.

Cop takes $22,000 from innocent man because man can't "prove" that it isn't drug money by okpokin Libertarian

[–]7oby 0 points1 point ago

Haha, no, what they'll do is bring a dog out, have him circle the car 3 times until the guy yanks his chain, then search and find nothing and the other cops will make fun of the guy who called them out.

source: personal experience. (badass right here, my friend tried to consent after I declined and what's even funnier is afterward they made fun of my friend for being a pussy)

"A bizarre operation": Why West Virginia has been sticking 1,064 high-end $22,600 routers into “little public institutions as small as rural libraries with just one computer terminal” by HandsOfNodin offbeat

[–]7oby 0 points1 point ago

I have to believe that the routers cost $12,000 and the rest of it may have been service contracts or something. if you buy a $25,000 car and a $5,000 warranty it doesn't make it a $30,000 car.

[–]7oby 2 points3 points ago

I think it's more of a "we need to stop this 'use it or lose it' budget situation because they're using it on stuff they don't need and we don't have the money to pay for it, it just means we're borrowing more from China" type situation... very comparable to storing $4,392,000 worth (ok, 'cost', not worth, there's no way) of routers in a warehouse.

(P.S., the routers were $12,000, not $22,600, there's an update)

It's even worse if there's a "bonus" for not spending all of it. I know of a place where this is the case and so equipment was going sorely out of date, getting poor maintenance, etc, because by saving the company $1,000,000 the guy got a bonus of like $100,000 or something along those lines. So instead of having less headaches and a better equipped workforce, bonuses!

Also, here's a real issue:

"A student in a school of 200 students should have the same opportunity as a student in a school with 2,000 students," one official told the paper.

Sounds like this guy actually believes what he's saying. That a $12,000 router (allegedly $22,600 was incorrect) operates better than a cheaper one. It's like saying "A person living in a city should have the same opportunity to cross rough terrain and waist-deep water as a person living up a mountain, so we bought everyone a Hummer H2". It's overkill to the nth degree, but he doesn't really understand that to give them the same opportunity has nothing to do with networking power and all about hardware and software that work well and help educate.
